BOSTON, Mass. – Manhattanville head women's hockey coach
David Turco earned his first collegiate head-coaching victory as the team defeated UMass-Boston by a score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon in Boston, Mass.
The first period breezed by fairly quickly as each side struggled to get any form of offense started, each side was given a power play opportunity with no success for either squad. The shots were fairly even at a 10-6 margin during the first 20 minutes of play in favor of the Beacons.
After the first intermission Manhattanville was given its second power play chance just 62 seconds into the period. The Valiants had four chances on the advantage but were unable to find the back of the goal, two minutes later the Valiants took a penalty of their own to give the Beacons a power play.
While short-handed junior Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) won a faceoff that resulted in a Valiant possession, at 7:07 into the second period junior Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) took a shot that opened up the scoring and give the Valiants a 1-0 lead.
The two sides had plenty of opportunities but all were turned aside by Manhattanville goalie Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) and UMass-Boston goalie Leah Hallet. The Valiants were awarded with another power play chance at 12:30 and the Valiants capitalized on the opportunity handed to them.
On the power play, sophomore Mallory Watts (Bloomfield, Mich./Honeybaked (MWEHL)) took a long shot off of a pass from junior Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College), who tallied her second assist on the year. Each team killed off one more penalty the remainder of the period and skated into the second intermission with the Valiants up 2-0.
Each side had a short power play in the first three minutes of the period as the Beacons took a penalty 36 seconds in, that was quickly negated by a Valiant penalty 11 seconds later. Little had a quick shot in the 11 seconds of short-handed time but was turned away by Hallet.
With 5:25 to go in the contest the Valiants finished off the Beacons with their third goal of the contest from the first goal of the season by junior Kelly Keane (Longmeadow, Mass./New England Falcons (EJHL)). Her goal was assisted Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)), for Morrison it was her third helper of the year.
In goal, Cote made 21 saves while collecting her first win of the season against her one loss that came a week earlier against RIT. Hallet took the loss despite making 27 saves, 18 of them in the second period, she falls to 0-2 on the young season.
The Valiants took 11 shots on the power play, going 1-for-5 with the man advantage. UMass-Boston had nearly the same amount of time on the power play as Manhattanville but was unable to convert, mustering only three shots. Faceoffs were also in favor of Manhattanville as they won 34 of 55 including a 13-3 winning margin from Kehoe, Morrison and freshman Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy).
Next up for Manhattanville (1-2-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East) is Saint Anselm tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in Manchester, N.H. as they look to improve their conference record to 2-0. UMass-Boston (1-2-0, 0-1-0 ECAC East) will also continue conference play tomorrow afternoon when they host Nichols at 1:00 p.m.
