Capozzi Named Capital One Academic All-American

Junior Michael Capozzi was named to the Academic All-America second team.
TOWSON, Md. – Junior Michael Capozzi (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/San Judas Tadeo) of the Manhattanville men's tennis team added another stellar achievement to his growing on- and off-court resume on Tuesday afternoon, as he became the first Valiant in 27 years to be named a Capital One Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) with a spot on the Men's At-Large second team.

For Capozzi, who earned a spot on the national ballot with a Men's At-Large first-team selection in May, he becomes just the third Valiant ever to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and first in nearly three decades, joining Bill Lahart '81 (men's basketball second team in 1978) and Jackie Jamieson '84 (softball first team in 1984) in the very select group.

The junior was one of 15 student-athletes named to the second team in the College Division, which encompasses all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions. The first student-athlete in program history to earn the honor in the competitive at-large category, Capozzi beat out athletes from the following other sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

Just a junior, Capozzi boasts a 3.97 cumulative GPA as a finance major with double minors in sociology and Italian. A six-time Dean's List honoree, Duchesne Scholar and soon-to-be two-time Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll recipient, he also was named Manhattanville's Humanitarian of the Year in 2011 for his extensive charity work in his native Dominican Republic.

On the court, Capozzi has earned back-to-back Freedom Conference Player of the Year honors and recorded three straight All-Conference first-team selections as well. In 2010-11, he combined for a 25-7 record in both singles and doubles play and captured a pair of titles at the MAC Individual Championships for the second year in a row. Already the winningest player in program history, he will enter his senior year with a 51-10 (.836) singles record and a 50-16 (.758) doubles mark.
