Arlen Marshall ’10 finished his eighth season as the head men’s hockey coach of his alma mater in 2019-20. Marshall has been a member of the Valiant family since 2006, spending four years on the men's hockey team and two years as an assistant coach before taking over the head coaching job in 2012.

2018-19 was the most successful year of the program under the direction of Marshall as the squad ended the year ranked No. 13 by both D3hockey.com and USCHO.com. The Valiants claimed the MAC regular season title, while Marshall earned Coach of the Year honors and Marco Ferraro ('19) was named Defensive Player of the Year. Overall, six players earned All-MAC accolades, including four First Team selections. Manhattanville finished the regular season as the third seed heading into the UCHC Tournament. The Valiants battled all the way through five games and two tiebreaking mini-games to claim their first-ever UCHC Tournament Championship and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Matt Lippa ('19) -- who graduated as the program's all-time goals (60) leader and second in points (118), all under the guidance of Marshall -- was named co-Player of the Year in the UCHC, while Ferraro and Oscar Arfelt ('19) also earned First Team honors. In NCAA play, Manhattanville advanced to the quarterfinal round following a thrilling 6-4 win over UMass Boston on the road in the first round -- Lippa scored a hattrick. Following the season, Lippa and Arflet earned First Team AHCA All-America honors and Second Team USCHO.com accolades. The pair also claimed CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors, while Arfelt was named an Academic All-American -- the second in program history.

Marshall was named the ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year and a finalist for the Sid Watson Award as Div. III National Coach of the Year in 2016-17, as he led the Valiants to another second-place finish in the ECAC West Conference. Manhattanville picked up four victories over nationally ranked teams, including three wins over top-five teams and the program's first-ever win over the top-ranked team in Division III, a thrilling 3-2 victory over consensus #1 Saint Norbert on November 26 at Playland. In addition, a program-record four Valiants earned All-ECAC West first- or second-team recognition after the season, while a school-record and conference-best 22 players were honored on the ECAC West All-Academic Team as well.

Marshall used a youth movement to get Manhattanville back near the top of the ECAC West Conference in 2015-16, guiding a squad with 12 freshmen and seven sophomores to a second-place finish in the conference regular-season standings despite being picked last in the conference preseason poll. The Valiants were recognized with a program-record-tying five All-ECAC West Conference selections and specialized in late-game dramatics, posting an impressive 6-1-1 record in overtime contests, the most OT wins in a single-season in school history and the most by any D-III team.

In his second year at the helm in 2013-14, Marshall led the Valiants to a 13-12-2 record and finished the season with four ECAC West All-Conference players, including first-team pick Anton Racklin ('15), who was also named the ECAC West Co-Defensive Player of the year in addition to becoming the fifth Valiant in program history to be named an AHCA All-American.

In his first season as the leader behind the bench, Marshall guided Manhattanville to a 15-10-3 record in 2012-13 and reached the ECAC West Conference Tournament championship game for the sixth time in program history after an overtime upset of top-seeded Utica in the semifinal round. The Valiants ended the year ranked 15th in the final D3hockey.com National Poll.

No stranger to Manhattanville hockey, Marshall spent two seasons as an assistant coach after completing one of the most prolific on-ice careers in Valiant history. A two-year co-captain who wore a letter in three of his four seasons, Marshall completed his career as one of just three Manhattanville players to reach the 100-point plateau thanks to 38 goals and 64 assists in 105 career games. He graduated third in career points, fourth in assists and sixth in goals all-time at the school, while also departing second in games played and sixth in power-play goals for a career.

In his senior season, Marshall set new career highs with 26 assists and 35 points to help lead the Valiants to the ECAC West Conference Tournament championship, one of three ECAC West Tournament titles that Manhattanville achieved in his four years with the team. The Valiants also reached a pair of NCAA Tournaments and finished all four seasons in the top-10 in the nation according to USCHO.com.

A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, the forward graduated from Manhattanville in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science. He also received his master’s degree in sports business management from the school in 2012.
