Courtney Burhans completed her third season as the head women's lacrosse coach at Manhattanville in 2015.
Under her direction, Manhattanville continued to take steps forward in 2015, posting a 4-11 record. Burhans' expertise helped to turn attacker Lauren Cassidy into an All-Freedom Conference netminder this season, one of three Valiant underclassmen (AnnaMarie Nardone and Olivia Drew) to earn All-Conference recognition following the season.
The Valiants showed improvement on and off the field despite a difficult record in 2014, as Burhans worked to integrate a roster that featured only two seniors and three players with two years of playing experience at the school. Following the season, senior Casandra Honovich earned her third straight All-Freedom Conference first-team selection and graduated as the school's all-time leader in goals and draw controls.
Burhans was named head coach just days before the start of the 2012-13 school year, and still managed to guide a small squad to a second straight berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament and a near upset of top-seeded FDU-Florham in the semifinals. After the season, a program-record five players were named to the All-Freedom Conference teams. Leading the way were first-team selections Honovich and Melissa Goncalves, who finished the year as the program's single-season record holders in goals and assists, respectively.Â
Burhans came to Manhattanville after one season at nearby Manhattan College, where she served as defensive coordinator, goalie coach and strength & conditioning coach for the Division I Jaspers. In her role with the team, she managed the team’s budget, assisted in the recruiting of potential student-athletes, implemented a strength & conditioning regiment for the program, and also played a role in scouting and game and practice management.
Â
Previously, she worked for one year with another local Division I program, Stony Brook University, where she also served as defensive coordinator and goalie coach with the Seawolves. In her role, she mentored the America East Conference’s first-team netminder and five All-Conference honorees overall.
Â
Burhans also brings Division I playing experience to Purchase, as she is a four-year letterwinner for Loyola (Md.) University. As a netminder for the Greyhounds, she was named a team captain as both a junior and a senior and helped the squad earn a berth in the Big East Conference Tournament for the first time in 2010.
Â
A native of Bayville, N.Y., Burhans graduated from Loyola in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and business.
