Pat Scanlon '03, MS '09 finished his 15th season as head men’s basketball coach at Manhattanville in 2018-19, as he continues to maintain the Valiants' status as a perennial contender both in the conference and in the region.
Scanlon finished the 2018-19 season as the program's all-time leader in both career victories (198) and games coached (390). He is one of only four coaches (along with current head baseball coach Jeff Caulfield, current head softball coach Dale Martin and former men's basketball mentor Ralph Tedesco) ever to coach a sport at Manhattanville for more than 12 seasons.
2018-19 was the Valiants' final season as a member of the MAC Freedom, and despite not qualifying for the postseason, the squad bosted one of the best individual seasons by any player in program history. Under the guidence of Scanlon and his staff, sophomore Sean Smith, Jr., became the youngest player in the history of the MAC to win at least a share of the Player of the Year honors. Smith was also named All-Region by D3hoops.com, All-District by the NABC, All-ECAC and First Team All-Met by the MBWA. The Yonkers, N.Y., native also set the program's single-game record for scoring with 46 against Wilkes University on December 8, 2018.
Manhattanville earned the first national ranking in program history in 2010-11, as Manhattanville got off to the best start to a season in program history (10-1) and as a result earned the #25 spot in the January 4, 2011 D3hoops.com poll. The first semester was capped by the program’s second-ever appearance at Madison Square Garden, where the Valiants defeated local rival Purchase, 66-54, on December 19 to remain undefeated at the World's Most Famous Arena.
In 2008-09, Scanlon took a team that graduated three 1,000-point scorers and four starters overall and led it to a share of the Freedom regular-season title and a berth in the conference championship game. One year after scoring over 80 points per game, Scanlon completely revamped the team and relied heavily on its defense, ranking ninth in Division III by allowing only 60.0 points per game. He also produced the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year in Trevoy Pointer.
In 2006-07, Manhattanville finished the year with a school-record 23 wins, including winning streaks of eight and nine games and the program’s first win over a ranked team (#9 William Paterson). Under Scanlon’s leadership, the team received votes in the D3hoops.com national poll for the first time and captured its first Skyline Conference title, earning the program its first berth in the NCAA Tournament in 28 years.
Multiple Valiants have gone on to play professionally after leaving Purchase, including Donte Chisolm '08, who inked the program’s first professional contact after the 2007-08 season by signing on with the Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association.
During the 2003-04 season, Scanlon served as an assistant coach under former NBA star Dean Meminger at Manhattanville, helping lead the team to an 18-10 record.
A native of nearby Bronxville, N.Y., Scanlon came to Manhattanville after starring at Fordham Prep and became one of the most durable, reliable players in Valiant history. He started 86 consecutive games over three seasons from 2000-03, scoring 1,026 points and averaging over 30 minutes per night during his four-year career. As a senior and captain, Scanlon led the Valiants to a 19-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the Skyline Conference, averaging a team-leading 15.4 points per game.
Scanlon earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Manhattanville in the spring of 2003. He also received his master’s degree in Sports Business Management from Manhattanville in 2009, and served as the interim Dean of Students at the school during the Spring 2013 semester.
