PURCHASE, N.Y. – Three Manhattanville men's soccer players scored to give the host Valiants a 3-1 victory over Freedom Conference opponent King's (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.
The Valiants got on the board in the third minute as sophomore Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario) scored his third of the season on a blast from 30 yards away. The Valiant offense which put seven shots on target and scored two more times in the first half, as senior Kenneil Haye (Queens, N.Y.) also sent a blast from outside the box to beat Monarch keeper Andrew O'Shura, giving the Valiants a 2-0 lead.
Right before the half, the Valiants added another goal, as junior Emil Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) finished a corner kick opportunity in the 43rd minute. Junior Adam Kent (London, England) sent his kick to the far post where senior Mitchel Ghiggia (Port Chester, N.Y.) let it go by in front of the net, allowing Sjöberg to finish the play.
The Valiant defense was great early in the second half, not allowing many opportunities for King's. The Monarchs scored late in the contest as Joey Bender cut the deficit to two goals, as he received a cross from Tim Meyer on the left side and headed the ball past Valiants senior netminder Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.).
Torres finished the contest with two saves, while O'Shura made five saves. Both squads finished with four corner kicks each, while the foul situation saw the Valiants get four caution cards in a span on 17 minutes. Manhattanville held a 13-7 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Manhattanville (7-4-1, 2-1-1 Freedom) will get back on the pitch on Monday, as they will host CUNYAC member College of Staten Island on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. King's (Pa.) will host Wilkes University in a home match on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
