CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –
The Manhattanville men's soccer team gained a point in the standings but could not muster up any offense as they tied Freedom conference foe DeSales University, 0-0, in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the DeSales Soccer Field.

The Valiants played a man-down for the final 78 minutes of the contest after a second yellow card was awarded to senior Shaune Allan (Edinburgh, Scotland) in the 32nd minute of the game. Playing 10-on-11, the Valiants leaned on their defensive unit to carry them for the remainder of the contest, as offense was not the most important part of the game.

DeSales finished the contest with a 16-12 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior netminder Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.) was effective for the Valiants, stopping all six shots he faced in goal, including two saves in overtime on DeSales forward Derek Long.

Junior Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) led the team with four shots, while senior Kenneil Haye (Queens, N.Y.), junior Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario) each had two shots. Long led the Bulldogs with five shots and two on target, while Jonathan Balfour had four shots along with two on target.

The Valiant defense got a break in the 66th minute as Haye got the team their only shot on goal of regulation. In the overtime periods the Valiants put pressure on DeSales' netminder Adam Franczak, forcing him to make two saves on Carlryd and Olazabal in the first overtime period.

The Valiants had a chance late in the second overtime to finish the contest as junior Adam Kent (London, England) sent a corner kick into the box that was eventually cleared by the Bulldogs. DeSales led the contest with seven corner kicks with Manhattanville's only other corner coming in the second half.

Manhattanville (4-3-1, 0-0-1 Freedom) will return back to non-conference action for a home tilt against Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. DeSales (7-3-1, 0-0-1 Freedom) will also be in action on Wednesday as they travel to Muhlenberg College for a 7 p.m. start.
