MADISON, N.J. – Nick Maccarrone and Josh Corpus scored for the FDU-Florham Devils in the first half as the home team defeated the Manhattanville men's soccer team by a 2-0 score on Wednesday evening at Shields Field.
With the win, FDU-Florham (9-5-1, 3-1-1 Freedom) picks up three important points in the Freedom Conference standings, while Manhattanville (8-5-1, 2-2-1 Freedom) drops into a tie for fifth place and currently sits on the outside of the playoff window. The team still has two remaining conference games beginning this weekend at Wilkes University, followed by a home match against Delaware Valley College.
Despite outshooting the Devils by a 14-11 margin, the Valiants had a hard time finding the back of the net against the FDU-Florham defense. Manhattanville finished with the same amount of shots on target as the Devils, but the host team scored its first goal in the 28th minute as a pass from Emin Matezic found Maccarrone to give FDU a 1-0 lead. The Devils added to the lead as Corpus scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
Manhattanville senior netminder Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.) made five saves in the loss, while Kevin Herbert made seven saves in the win.
The Valiants will travel down to Wilkes for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon, while the Devils will also be on the road on Saturday as they travel to Misericordia for a 3:30 p.m. start.
