PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman Helena Riede led a balanced FDU-Florham attack with eight kills as the Devils handed Manhattanville a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-18) defeat in the Valiants' home and Freedom Conference finale on Wednesday evening at Kennedy Gymnasium.
Riede had eight of the Devils' 32 kills, as FDU-Florham hit .196 at a team to pick up the straight-set win. Senior Lauren Brazier had five kills without an error and classmate Kerry Kuperman added a team-leading 14 assists as well for the visitors.
Junior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) paced the Valiants with eight kills and seven digs, while classmate Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) added a match-best 18 assists, eight digs and three kills for Manhattanville.
The first set was a back-and-forth frame that set the tone for the rest of the match. After FDU-Florham built up an early 7-4 lead, the Valiants came back with an 8-1 run to take their biggest lead of the set, 12-8. The home team kept the Devils at bay for a while before FDU came back to tie the score at 16-all, and neither team scored more than one point in a row the rest of the way until kills by Kuperman and Brazier gave FDU-Florham the edge it needed and a 25-23 win.
After the Devils made quick work of the Valiants in the second set, FDU shook off some early errors to take an 11-5 lead in the third frame thanks to an 11-3 run. Manhattanville came back with a run of its own to get back into the frame, scoring eight of the next nine points thanks to a pair of service aces from freshman Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) and two kills from Morales. However, the Devils made one final decisive run to re-take control of the set, winning 12 of the set's last 15 points to close out the match.
Manhattanville (9-17, 0-7 Freedom) will play its final five matches of the year on the road, beginning with a non-conference match at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday night at 7 p.m. FDU-Florham (28-7, 5-2 Freedom) returns to action on Saturday at Saint Joseph's (L.I.) College at noon.
