KING'S POINT, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team had a tough day at the Merchant Marine Tri-Match, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday morning and afternoon at Lieberth Gymnasium, falling to the host Mariners and Western Connecticut State University by the same 3-0 score.
In the team's first match of the day, the Valiants overcame a tough first set to nearly topple the Mariners in the final two frames, but eventually fell by a 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-21) score.
Freshman Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) led the team with seven kills in the match, while also posting 11 digs and two solo blocks. Classmate Jocelyn Branca (Eastchester, N.Y.) led the team with a match-high 17 digs to go with four kills and a service ace in a losing effort.
Things did not get an easier in Manhattanville's second match of the day, as the Valiants dropped another 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-15) decision to Western Connecticut State.
This time it was junior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) leading the team offensively, posting eight kills, while also registering 13 digs. Four Valiants reached double-figures in the dig category, led by junior Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn.) with a team-high 17 and Camaj with 14. Junior Maggie Black (Seattle, Wash.) added four kills and classmate Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) added 10 digs as well for the Valiants in the loss.
Manhattanville (6-11, 0-4 Freedom) will get another chance at picking up its first Freedom Conference win of the season on Wednesday, as the Valiants host King's (Pa.) College in a conference matchup at Kennedy Gymnasium starting at 7 p.m.
