MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored a pair of goals as the #8 Manhattanville women's hockey team remained perfect in ECAC East Conference play with a 5-1 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at St. George's Prep School Arena.
All five Manhattanville goals were scored by sophomores, as Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) (Kemptville, Ont.), Ella Hubley (Santa Monica, Calif./LA Selects) (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) (Montreal, Que.) along with Morrison all tallied goals in the win.
The Valiants out-hustled the Seahawks to the tune of a 44-15 edge in shots. The special teams were productive also in the contest as the Valiants erased four man-advantages for the home team and scored once on the power-play.
The Valiants needed a mere 29 seconds into the contest to take the lead as Morrison tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season, unassisted. The Seahawks tied the contest midway through the period as Sarah Small and Kristen Cokely found Erin McCullough for her first of the season at the 13:05 mark.
The Valiants ran away with the contest two minutes later, as Morrison dished off to Kehoe for her third goal of the season as the Valiants took a 2-1 lead. Morrison netted her second of the night to finish off her three-point performance with a power-play goal off assists from classmate Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College) (Montreal, Que.) and freshman Tori Pizzuto (Waterbury, Conn./Westminster) (Waterbury, Conn.) with 1:22 remaining in the opening period.
The ladies in black added two more goals in the second frame to take the 5-1 lead as Hubley scored her first goal of the season off a pass from freshman Caitlin Beauvais (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) at the 11:51 mark. Just as the second period was ending, the newly formed line of senior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas) (Brampton, Ont.) and freshman Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) (Southgate, Mich.) found Occhionero for her first goal of the season with five seconds left.
The Valiants poured out 22 shots in the middle frame as Salve Regina netminder Rebecca Simmons was forced to make 39 saves in the contest but was dealt the defeat. Manhattanville freshman netminder Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) (Detroit, Mich.) was good in goal making 14 saves for her second victory of the season.
Manhattanville (6-1, 5-0 ECAC East) will take on #10 Trinity (Conn.) College on Tuesday evening in a pivotal battle with national rankings on the line. The game will be played away from Playland Ice Casino as the Valiants will wear their home white uniforms at the Terry Connors Ice Rink in Stamford, Conn. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. and the Valiants will honor members of the Stamford Youth Hockey during the contest. Salve Regina (2-4, 2-3 ECAC East) will head north to Bowdoin on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
