GENEVA, N.Y.
– One night after giving up two third-period goals in a loss, the #6 Manhattanville men's hockey team turned the tables on Saturday evening and used a pair of goals late in the contest to pull away from Hobart College, 3-1, in a tightly contested ECAC West Conference matchup on Saturday night at the Geneva Recreation Center.

Manhattanville wasted little time getting on the board on Saturday night, as senior assistant captain Mickey Lang (Reno, Nev.) beat Hobart goalie Nick Broadwater just 90 seconds into the evening. Off of passes from sophomore Scott Hudson (St. Albert, Alta.) and senior captain Lem Randall (Yellowknife, N.W.T.), the senior All-American's blast found the top corner from the side of the circle to put the visitors up early.

Neither team did much else for the remainder of the frame, however, and the Valiants went into the first intermission with that one-goal lead. The shots in the opening 20 minutes were tied at nine apiece.

The second period also featured just one goal, coming off the stick of Hobart's Josh Taylor. The middle frame was the Statesmen's best of the night, as they outshot the Valiants by a 15-9 margin.

But then the third period rolled along, and Manhattanville had the best of play on both sides of the ice and as a result was able to pull out the victory. The team held a 12-5 edge in shots and kept Hobart to just one shot on the goal over the final 11 minutes of action.

But while the Valiants were playing well defensively, the team also could not find the goal themselves until the 15:04 mark, when junior assistant Evan Michalchuk (Edmonton, Alta.) scored his third of the year to put the visitors ahead. From deep in his own zone, senior Sasha Romanenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) sent a long pass forward to Michalchuk, who went in all alone on Broadwater and deked to his backhand to score the goal. Freshman Brian Elser (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also was credited with an assist on the tally.

Things got a little dicey for the visitors in the final minute of regulation, as Randall was whistled for a holding penalty and Hobart pulled Broadwater for a six-on-four advantage. However, Manhattanville held the Hobart power play at bay and junior Marcus von Sydow (Stockholm, Sweden) put a cap on the evening with an empty-net score, the first of his collegiate career, with a single second remaining on the clock.

Junior netminder Pierre-Olivier Lemieux (Rimouski, Que.) had another solid outing for Manhattanville in goal, turning aside 28 of the 29 shots he faced in the win. Broadwater made 27 saves in a losing effort for Hobart.

Manhattanville (3-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC West) will now go two weeks without a game yet again, as the Valiants do not return to action until Saturday, November 20 when the team hosts Neumann University in an ECAC West contest at Playland Ice Casino starting at 7 p.m., with the live video coverage on GoValiants.TV starting around 6:50 p.m.
