RYE, N.Y. – Teraysa White made 40 saves and continues to haunt the Valiants as the New England Pilgrims came into Playland Ice Casino and stole a 5-3 victory from the Manhattanville women's hockey team on Saturday evening in an ECAC East Contest on Autism Awareness Night.
Kristin Dehm scored a pair of goals in the contest as the Pilgrims scored a pair of goals late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room. Already leading 1-0, Kate Kellar won a faceoff with less than 10 seconds remaining the period and found Rachel White at the door step for her second of the season. Alexis Fitzpatrick was also credited with an assist as she received the faceoff and fed White.
New England College attacked again in the second period as Alyssa Hoot sent a stretch pass to Dehm and scored on a breakaway at the 9:50 mark. The Valiants cut the deficit to 3-1 with 0.2 seconds remaining in the period as a power-play faceoff won by sophomore Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ont.) to the point allowed junior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) to put a low shot past Teraysa White.
The Valiants attempted a comeback in the third period with a goal from Katie Little (Victoria, B.C.) on the power-play with assists from classmates Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Que.) at the 3:15 mark. The Pilgrims tried to ice the contest with 1:47 remaining in the contest with a goal from Stephanie Spera in front of the off with a pass from Chelsea Torrico. Manhattanville made a valiant effort with 42 seconds remaining as the team emptied their net and Morrison scored her eighth goal of the season from Little as the Valiants trailed 4-3. New England finally capitalized on the empty net with 19 seconds left, however, with Spera's second tally of the night that ended the suspense.
The Valiants finished the contest outshooting the Pilgrims 43-17 but were puzzled at times trying to find ways to beat the netminder White, who made 40 saves. Manhattanville sophomore Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Que.) made 12 saves in the contest and was dealt her second loss of the season.
Manhattanville (7-3, 6-1 ECAC East) will travel to take on Neumann on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. before heading home for the winter break. New England College (5-3, 5-1 ECAC East) will travel to Castleton State on December 11 at 3 p.m.
