PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman Bryan Merlos (Harrison, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist as the Manhattanville men's soccer team walked away with a four-goal edge over Farmingdale State, 5-1, on Saturday evening in the final game of the 2010 Valiant Classic at GoValiants.com Field.
Manhattanville attacked early and often on the Rams, finishing with a 26-4 shot advantage (11 on target). The Valiants got on the board in the sixth minute, as sophomore Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored off a redirected header by junior Chukwueloka Muoka (Bronx, N.Y.). Mouka found the ball after classmate Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) blasted a rocket off the cross bar outside the 18-yard box.
Manhattanville added its second goal of the contest seven minutes later as Carlryd hit the post with a shot from just inside the box and it was then redirected off a Rams' defender into the back of the net for an own goal.
Twenty-three Valiants touched the pitch in the contest, with the duo of Merlos and sophomore Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario) connecting for the third goal of the game, as Merlos found a streaking Olazabal at the back post for his first collegiate goal. Merlos added his tally with 49 seconds remaining in the half, as the Valiants' four-goal outburst was more than enough to secure the victory.
Manhattanville finished the contest with its fifth goal in the 78th minute as sophomore Papy Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) fed wide-open classmate Easton Morris (Monrovia, Liberia). Morris found an open gap through the five-hole of Rams' reserve netminder Ray Levan.
Farmingdale State added their only goal of the contest off a Manhattanville error which led to an own goal in the 85th minute.
Manhattanville senior netminder Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.) finished with three saves in the contest and made a spectacular save in the 49th minute off a redirected header to keep the Rams off the board.
Manhattanville (2-2) will have a three-day rest period before hosting Purchase College in the Battle of Anderson Hill Road beginning on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Farmingdale State (1-5-0) will host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Purchase contest will have live stats on GoValiants.com along with a video broadcast on GoValiants.TV.
