RYE, N.Y. - Senior Holly Nonis (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Thomas Aquinas) finished with a four-point night as a 10th-ranked and rejuvenated Manhattanville women's hockey team came away with a 9-1 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC East Conference game at Playland Ice Casino on Friday evening.
The Valiants returned to active competition after a two-week rest, and dominated play over the Panthers. Twelve players recorded points in the contest, as Nonis' three goals led the way for the Valiants. Linemate Ella Hubley (Santa Monica, Calif./LA Selects) had a breakout game, as the sophomore recorded three points on a goal and two assists.
Five Valiants recorded two points in the contest, as senior captain Shannon Coffey (Malden, Mass./North American Hockey Academy) had a pair of assists to give the Manhattanville top line nine points on the night. Sophomore Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) had a goal and an assist as did classmates Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) and Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)), while on defense sophomore Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) added a pair of helpers and classmate Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) scored a tally to give the sophomore class 12 points on the night. Seniors Jess Scioli (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and Erica Garcia (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley) and junior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)) added single points in the game as well.
Manhattanville held the Panthers shotless in the first period, while taking 17 shots towards goal and connecting on one early on. The Valiants got their first goal at the 2:46 mark, as Coffey and Nonis found Hubley at the wing for her third goal of the season.
Once again the Valiants pressured Plymouth State in the second period, and this time hit the back of the net five times to break the game open. The home team took a 2-0 lead midway through the period and scored three more goals in the next 1:35. Occhionero added her fourth goal of the season with assists from Sidjak and Little at 8:12, followed by the team's third tally of the night just 15 seconds later. Returning to the lineup after missing the previous three games, Schill scored her first of the season, as the center parked herself in front of the net; Morrison and junior Hannah Muskego (Neilburg, Saskatchewan/PWM Steelers (AMMFHL)) were credited with the assists at the 8:27 mark.
Less than a minute later, Scioli nabbed her first goal of the season with an assist from Hubley at the 9:19 mark to make it 4-0. The Valiants ended their four goals in 95 seconds stretch on Nonis' first of the night and third of the season with assists from linemates Coffey and Hubley.
The Valiants ended the period with Little's eighth of the season, unassisted, as the winger broke in on Panthers' netminder Ali Ponte. Plymouth State recorded their first set of shots in the contest as Jamie O'Brien broke in on freshman Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)), who stopped the initial shots from O'Brien and Molly Blaine but a third try by Jane Baruch found the back of the net for her fourth of the year with just over seven minutes remaining. The Valiants outshot Plymouth State by a 5-to-1 margin (20-4) in the second period, with Evans stopping three of the four shots at her.
In the final stanza, Nonis added a pair to complete the hat trick and Morrison scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year. The second Nonis goal came on the power play with an assist from Solomito with 18:40 left. Morrison got help from her classmates Schill and Sidjak as she stood in front of the cage at the 11:53 mark. Nonis finished the game as a delayed penalty was forthcoming for the Panthers and the senior scored with the extra attacker after Garcia found her at the wing.
Manhattanville finished with a 55-5 edge in shots and went 1 for 4 on the man advantage. Evans finished with four saves and was not asked to do much in the game, as the possession favored the Valiants on the offensive side. Ponte made 39 saves in goal for PSU and her relief, Nicole Crandle, made seven saves in the final 5:02 of the game.
Manhattanville (10-4-1, 8-1-0 ECAC East) will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon to complete the weekend as they will host Southern Maine at 4:30 p.m.
