RYE, N.Y. –
Too many penalties and a tough time on the penalty kill haunted the Manhattanville women's hockey team as the Valiants allowed four power-play goals in a 5-2 defeat at the hands of #3 Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon at Playland Ice Casino.

The Cardinals finished 4-of-5 on the man-advantage as they outshot the Valiants 35-22 in the contest and scored four times in the final two periods to break a 1-1 tie after the first period.  The Valiants had some great chances in the contest, but a 20-save performance by Plattsburgh State netminder Mandy Mackrell held the hosts in check.

Manhattanville got their two goals in the contest from freshman Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) and sophomore Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College), but were unable to capitalize in the second period when they outshot the Cardinals 11-10.

Plattsburgh took the lead with one second remaining on their first power-play as Teal Gove hit the back of the net with an assist from Kristen Bond at the 6:01 mark. The Valiants answered with a breakaway goal by Hutchinson as she went to her backhand on Mackrell on a pass from sophomore Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)).

The Cardinals added a pair of goals in the second period as Gove netted her second of the game with assists from Steph Moon and Bond. Moon then scored the eventual game-winner as her stick deflected a pass from Megan DiJulio into the back of the net to give the visiting team a 3-1 lead at the 11:39 mark.

The Valiants' attempt for a comeback was looking strong in the third period as sophomores Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) and Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) sent a pass to the point, allowing Nutkevitch's wrist shot to go under the glove of Mackrell to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 16:22 left in the contest.

However, the Cardinals added a power-play goal from the point as Kara Buehler's high wrist shot went over the shoulder of sophomore netminder Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) at the 6:28 mark.  With 10:05 remaining in the contest, Helen Giroux crashed the net to give her team the 5-2 lead with assists from DiJulio and Moon.

Moon finished the game with four points on a goal and three assists.

Cote made 30 saves for the Valiants but was dealt her third defeat of the season, while Mackrell made 20 saves for her seventh win of the year.

Manhattanville (9-4-1, 7-1 ECAC East) will have two weeks off to prepare for Plymouth State on January 21. Plattsburgh (10-1-1, 6-1 ECAC West) will host Norwich on January 12 at 7 p.m.
