PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team continued their stretch of five-straight conference matches and defeated the visiting FDU-Florham Devils on Tuesday afternoon by the score of 3-0 at GoValiants.com Field.
Manhattanville struggled to get any offense going in the first half of play as they took eight shots with none reaching the back of the net and only two on target. Senior Adam Kent (London, England/Sutton Grammar) had the best opportunities of the half during an eight-second span where he got two shots off against the Devils.
The first half Manhattanville was dominated by the defensive line led by senior Emil Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden/Tyreso Gymnasium), and juniors Marco Blasetti (Yonkers, N.Y./Rye Country Day), Edmond Addison (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln (N.Y.)) and Sebastian Siring (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet). The quartet of defenders held the opposition to no shots in the first 45 minutes.
After the halftime break the Valiants added to their shot total with three more in the first 12 minutes of the period. On the third shot, the Valiants were able to break through as freshman Yani Quinteros (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) tipped in a short pass from Chukwueloka Muoka (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Leadership Academy) to give the Valiants the 1-0 lead.
After a shot off the foot of senior Keston George (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago/Victory Christian Academy) was initially saved, the captain regained the rebound and passed it to the middle of the box finding classmate Daniel Carlryd (Gothenburg, Sweden/LM Engstrom) who chipped it into the goal at the 72:16 mark to open up the lead to 2-0.
Less than seven minutes later, Kent was fouled inside the box and was rewarded with a penalty shot at the 78:56 point of the second half. The London native placed the ball into the lower left side of the net past a diving Tim Kirk to cap off the scoring at three for the Valiants.
FDU-Florham was finally able to get a pair of shots off in the final 10 minutes of play, one off target and the other handled easily by graduate goalkeeper Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) who collected his 8th win of the season against the three loses. Kirk made six saves for the Devils and allowed the three Valiant markers as his record falls to 3-8 on the year.
In terms of shots the Valiant took 20 to the Devils pair, and corner kicks were also well in favor of the home squad at a 13-2 margin.
