PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The Manhattanville women's volleyball team had their three-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon at the Rhode Island College Tri-Match, as the Valiants fell to WPI and the host Anchorwomen by 3-0 scores at the Murray Center.

The Valiants had a tough time offensively against two difficult foes, as Manhattanville recorded just 40 kills in the six sets compared to 78 for the opposition. Senior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani) led the team with 13 kills on the day, while freshman Sam Delmer (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) posted a team-leading 25 digs in the two matches.

Going up against the Engineers in their first match of the day, the Valiants struggled to contain the WPI offensive attack in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-19) defeat. The Engineers hit .229 for the match and put down 39 kills in the win, led by 13 from Belinda Nwagbara and 12 from Kerrin Beovich.

Gomes was the Valiants' top offensive player against WPI, posting nine kills on 26 attempts. Freshman Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) has 16 assists and Delmer had a match-high 15 digs as well for the Valiants in the loss.

The second match of the day got no easier for Manhattanville against the hosts, falling to RIC by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-12) score. Rhode Island's Marina Stoermer single-handedly led her team to a win, eclipsing the Valiants as a team with 20 kills on 31 attempts (.581 hitting).

As a team, Manhattanville managed just 18 kills, with Gomes, Delmer and senior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic/Colegio San Jose) all tying for the team lead with four apiece. Gomes added a team-high nine assists and Delmer again led all players with 10 digs in a losing effort.

Manhattanville (12-11) will look to rebound in time for Senior Week, when the Valiants host four matches in five days at Kennedy Gym to close out the 2011 home schedule. The Senior Week festivities begin on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a Freedom Conference matchup against Wilkes that will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV starting at 6:55 p.m.
