NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team fell for the second straight day on the road to the Elmira Soaring Eagles by a score of 7-3. This is the first time in program history that the Valiants have started a season 0-2, after having lost to two top ten opponents to start the season.
The Valiants came out with a lot more offensive tempo than in their first game against RIT a day before, but still fell behind 1-0. Junior
Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) tied the game at the 8:25 mark of the period when she put one top shelf over the opposing keeper, assists on the goal were credited to a pair of freshman as
Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) and
Nicolette Gosselin (Barre, Vt./VT 802 Selects) picked up their first points in their first career games.
Just under four minutes later the Soaring Eagles retook their one goal edge as Elmira was able to put one past sophomore goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)). The Valiants once again tied the game when junior
Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) scored her first of the season off of a pass from Kehoe and
Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)).
After the first intermission Elmira got right back to work at the 1:53 point of the second period and opened up a 3-2 lead. Exactly one minute later junior
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) added her first of the season to tie the game once again at three, the assist was credited to Mary Rose.
From that point the Eagles scored one more time in the second period and didn't look back.
In the third period the Valiants allowed two quick goals in a nine second span which resulted in Evans being pulled in favor of junior
Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College). The new goalkeeper for Manhattanville turned away five shots in relief.
Taking the loss was Evans who made 25 saves and falls to 0-1-0 on the year. Lauren Sullivan won her first of the season improving her record to 1-1-0.
On the power play, Manhattanville went 1-for-3 while Elmira went 2-for-7 on the man advantage.
Manhattanville (0-2-0) will be back in action next weekend when they open up their conference schedule at UMass-Boston on November 4 at 4:00 p.m. Elmira (1-1-0) will be back in action on November 12 when they travel up I-81 to take on Cortland State.
