DALLAS, Pa. – The Cougars' Sam Helmstetter scored twice on 11 shots as Misericordia University snapped the Manhattanville women's soccer team's two-game winning streak with a 5-0 victory in a Freedom Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars, coming off a win over nationally ranked Ithaca last week, came out strong against the Valiants, posting an 11-1 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play.
The first score of the afternoon came in the 24th minute, when Helmstetter took a feed from Laura Roney and beat junior keeper Brianna Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison). The teams looked like they would go into the half with that 1-0 score, but Misericordia netted a late backbreaker as Courtney Dillon found the back of the net with 47 seconds remaining in the frame to give the home team a two-goal advantage headed into the half.
The second half got no better for the visitors, as Misericordia scored three more times on freshman Bridget Miranda (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), who came on the start the second half in goal. Erin McGreal, Roney and Helmstetter scored for the home team in the first 26 minutes of the second frame to account for the final score.
For the afternoon, Scapperotti made two saves on four shots in the first half of play, then made four more in the final 11:04 of the contest. Miranda turned aside five of the eight attempts she faced in the first 34 minutes of the second half. Misericordia netminder Jess Anderson did not allow a goal on one shot in the first 66:39 of the match to earn the victory.
Manhattanville (2-11-0, 1-1-0 Freedom) will continue conference play on Wednesday, when the Valiants host FDU-Florham in a rematch of last season's Freedom Conference Championship game beginning at 4 p.m., with the GoValiants.TV broadcast set to begin at 3:50 p.m. Misericordia (6-3-2, 1-0-1 Freedom) will travel to King's (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday night.
