Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team fell on the road to Plattsburgh State by a score of 4-0. The loss ends the team's fall semester of games as they will enter the 2012 calendar year with a 4-5-2 overall record.
The game started out with both teams struggling to get any form of puck control as it was an evenly matched first period. In the first frame the Valiants were outshot by a 6-3 margin but made more of their shots count with better placement while Plattsburgh took a majority of theirs from near the blue line.
In the second period the Valiants were outshot once again by an 11-8 margin, but unlike the first period Plattsburgh hit the back of the net on three occasions. The first came 38 seconds into the period on a great passing attack by the Cardinals that faked out senior goalie
Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) and Plattsburgh had a 1-0 lead.
Just over three minutes later, Plattsburgh struck again to expand their lead to 2-0. After a penalty was taken by the Valiants the Cardinals capitalized on the advantage of the opportunity and ballooned their lead up to three.
In the third period the Cardinals tacked on an insurance goal to make it 4-0 but were able to control the latter stages of the game as Plattsburgh fell into a defensive shell.
The offense for Manhattanville was headlined by the second unit of juniors
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) and
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)), as well as sophomore
Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) as the line produced four official shots while creating several more opportunities throughout the course of the game.
Defensively the Valiants were led by senior captain
Hannah Muskego (Neilburg, Saskatchewan/PWM Steelers (AMMFHL)) who played a solid two-way game while adding a rocket of a shot from the blue line in the third. Fellow captain Cote collected the loss in goal while also playing well.
Cote made 24 saves in the loss while falling to a 1-4-2 record. On the winning side was Sydney Aveson who made 20 saves to earn her sixth victory of the year.
