PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team won their third ECAC East Conference game of the season on Friday night by the score of 9-0 over Plymouth State. The Valiants had goals by seven different players led by junior
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) and freshman
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)), both of whom had two goals.
Little and Traun had two points each, while junior
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) and sophomore
Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) led all scorers with three points apiece, with both forwards scoring once and chipping in two assists as well.
In the first period, the Valiants wasted little time getting on the board when Traun scored her first of the evening on the power play, with the assist given to Schill just 3:52 into the game. Less than a minute later freshman
Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)), playing in just her second career game, scored at the 4:37 mark of the period for her first career goal.
Little got in on the action with her fourth of the season at the 7:58 mark with assists from linemates Hutchinson and junior Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) to give the Valiants a 3-0 lead. Schill added her fourth of the year at the 9:28 mark to make the game 4-0, as junior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) was credited with her third assist on the power-play goal.
Freshman Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) rounded out the scoring in the first period with her first career goal at the 13:59 mark of the stanza, as the Valiants skated into the locker room with a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The scoring tapered off for the Valiants after five first-period goals, scoring once in the second and three more times in the third to complete the evening.
The lone goal of the second period was scored by junior defender Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) for her first of the season. The Valiants also fought off four penalties in the second period as well, while being outshot by an 11-6 differential. Freshman goalkeeper Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) was the one fending off those shots in goal for Manhattanville, making her first career start between the pipes.
In the third the Valiants got right back to where they left off in the first period when Traun added her second of the game just 1:37 into the final frame. Junior defender Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College) picked up the assist on the play.
Not to be outdone by her teammate, Little notched her second of the game on an unassisted goal with 15:44 remaining in the game. For Little it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Hutchinson, who had two assists to this point in the game, scored the ninth and final Valiant tally after receiving an assist from senior forward Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)).
As a team Manhattanville more than doubled up their opponents in terms of shots by a 35-17 margin. The Valiants also went 3-for-5 on their power play opportunities while Plymouth State went 0-for-7.
In goal, Shaughnessy made 17 saves while picking up her first career win as well as her first shutout. Taking the loss was Plymouth State starter Ali Ponte, who allowed the first five goals of the game before being pulled after 6:01 of ice time. She made way for Nicole Crandle, who stopped 18 shots while allowing the final four Valiant tallies.
Manhattanville (4-4-0, 3-2-0 ECAC East) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Southern Maine as they continue their weekend series in ECAC East Conference play at 1:00 p.m. Plymouth State (0-3-2, 0-3-2 ECAC East) will also play tomorrow when they host Nichols at 2:30 p.m.
