MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team dropped its 2011 Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday night at the Ferguson Rec Center, as the Valiants fell to host FDU-Florham by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-20) score.
The two teams were a style of contrasts on Wednesday, as FDU-Florham used 20 players over the course of the match while Manhattanville was limited to seven. As a result, 14 Devils recorded at least one of the team's 35 kills, led by Jenna Cowie with a team-leading five.
For Manhattanville, freshman Sam Delmer (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) continued her recent resurgence with a match-best eight kills and also added eight digs and a pair of block assists. Senior Damaris Morales (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic/Colegio San Jose) added four kills for the visitors as well.
The Devils took control of the match early and never let Manhattanville into the contest, holding the visitors to just one kill in the opening set while putting down 11 of their own. The second set went the same way, and while the Valiants decreased the kill margin to just three (13-10) in the third set, it was not enough to avoid the sweep.
Manhattanville (6-2, 0-1 Freedom) will return to the court on Saturday at the Bard Tri-Match, as the Valiants take on the host Raptors at noon and Bay Path at 2 p.m. FDU-Florham (8-3, 1-0 Freedom) will face Franklin and Stevens on day one of the Stevens Ducks Classic on Friday starting at 6 p.m.
