ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Bard Tri-Match, as the Valiants swept the host Raptors, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18), before suffering a tough 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-17, 25-21) loss to Bay Path to conclude the day at Stevenson Gymnasium.
Senior Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani) led the way offensively on the afternoon, posting a team-leading 12 kills and .217 hitting percentage to go with four service aces and 19 assists. Classmate Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) also hit well with 11 kills on .205 hitting, while freshman Sam Delmer (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) cleaned up defensively with 52 digs in the seven sets.
In the first match of the day, Manhattanville went up against the host team and received no trouble in a straight-set victory. All seven Valiants had at least one kill in the contest, led by the team-high six from both Gomes and senior Maggie Black (Seattle, Wash./The Center School), and the visitors as a team posted a .229 hitting percentage. Gomes had the only double-double of the match with 13 assists and 10 digs, while Delmer led all players with 25 digs.
The second match of the afternoon did not go quite as planned for the Valiants, as Nadine Harkless recorded 18 kills to lead the Wildcats past the Valiants in four sets. Gomes and Johnson tied for the team lead with six kills apiece, but Manhattanville as a team could not get much going offensively and hit just .093 for the match. Delmer again led all players with 27 digs and added four aces, but it wasn't enough.
Manhattanville (7-3, 0-1 Freedom) will return home to Kennedy Gymnasium on Wednesday night, as the Valiants play host to DeSales in a key Freedom Conference matchup beginning at 7 p.m., with the GoValiants.TV live video broadcast starting at 6:55 p.m.
