Manhattanville Stopped by No. 1 Norwich, 6-1

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
The Manhattanville women's ice hockey team had their three-game winning streak snapped as they fell on the road to the No. 1 team in the country, the Norwich Cadets by the score of 6-1 on Friday evening in Northfield, Vt.

The Valiants started off strong out of the gates as junior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) and senior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)) notched the first three shots of the night for either side, with all three shots stopped by Kelly Fisk of Norwich. At 4:46 Norwich took a penalty to give Manhattanville their first power play chance of the night, within the first power play Norwich took yet another penalty and gave the Valiants a two-player advantage.

With only nine seconds remaining on the 5-on-3 the Valiants took an early 1-0 lead as senior captain Hannah Muskego (Neilburg, Saskatchewan/PWM Steelers (AMMFHL)) notched her second goal of the season after her initial shot was saved by Fisk. The goal for Manhattanville woke up the Norwich offense as they went on an 11-1 shooting spree with the 11th shot finding its' way behind Valiant netminder Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) to tie the game with 1:17 to go in the frame.

In the second period the Cadets continued their offensive play and notched the first five shots of the period, all stopped by Cote. At 6:09 into the second stanza the Valiants were given their second full extra skater chance, but surrendered their first shorthanded goal of the season as Norwich took the 2-1 advantage. Just over four minutes later the Cadets scored again and took the 3-1 edge into the final period.

In the third, the Cadets were given another power play chance and capitalized just 1:55 into the frame to take a 4-1 lead. Over the final 18:05, Norwich scored twice more and came away with the 6-1 victory and only their second win at home all-time against Manhattanville.

As a team Manhattanville was outshot by their hosts by a 35-19 margin, as junior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) led the squad taking four shots. Morrison and junior defender Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College) were second on the team with three apiece.

In goal for Manhattanville, Cote made 29 saves while suffering her sixth loss of the year. Fisk for Norwich made 18 saves while allowing the lone Muskego tally as her record improves to 9-0-0 on the season.

Manhattanville (7-7-2, 5-3-1 ECAC East) will return to action tomorrow afternoon in South Burlington, Vermont to take on the St. Michael's Knights at 3:00 p.m. While Norwich (13-1-1, 10-0-1 ECAC East) will also be back in action when they play host to the Nichols Bison at 1:00 p.m.
