RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team defeated the Saint Anselm Hawks on Friday evening by the score of 2-1. Special teams played a key role in the victory as the Valiants scored both short-handed and power-play goals in the win.
The game started off quickly with the action beginning right out of the gate, as the Valiants were called for a quick penalty just 28 seconds into the contest. Manhattanville had just about killed the entire disadvantage when junior Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) stripped the puck from the Hawks at center ice and skated into the offensive zone sending a pass towards the net.
As the pass made its way through some traffic, junior Kelly Keane (Longmeadow, Mass./New England Falcons (EJHL)) was there to tap home the goal and give Manhattanville the early 1-0 lead just 2:12 into the period. The two sides skated five aside for about the next ten minutes of the play, with the Hawks controlling much of the play in the opening period. The Valiants were given their first power play chance at 13:04 but couldn't capitalize.
The two teams skated into the first intermission with the Valiants holding on to their 1-0 lead despite being outshot 8-5 through the first 20 minutes. After the intermission Manhattanville began to control the majority of the period until the Valiants took a penalty that they eventually killed off with 11:32 gone by.
Just over 10 seconds after the kill, the Hawks took a shot from a sharp angle that fluttered over the shoulder of junior netminder Emy Cote (Saint-Hubert, Quebec/Dawson College) and into the goal to tie the game at one. A few minutes after scoring the Hawks took a penalty to give the Valiants' special teams another chance to shine.
On the power play after some crisp passing by the Valiants, junior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) put the Valiants up for good with a power-play goal with assists being credited to classmate Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) and sophomore Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)).
The Valiants continued to control play in the third period and outshot their guests by a 7-5 margin in the final frame to conclude their game totals at 23-19 in favor of Manhattanville.
In goal, Cote earned her third win of the season while making 18 saves along the way and allowing the lone tally. The Hawks had 21 saves by goalkeeper Amy Zappen, who was denied of her 10th win of the season while allowing the two Valiant goals.
