UTICA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team got back in the win column for the first time in five games after defeating the Utica Pioneers by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Junior
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) and sophomore
Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) scored for the Valiants en route to the victory.
During the first period both sides played one another equally as they ended the first 20 minutes of play with nine shots each without hitting the back of the net. In the frame, Manhattanville needed to kill off three penalties while Utica killed off their lone penalty.
In the second both sides took three penalties each, but neither side was able to capitalize on the man-advantage. In the second the Valiants outshot their hosts by a 13-4 margin and swung momentum into their favor heading to the third period.
In the third Manhattanville continued to control the puck and was finally able to break through on the power-play when Schill broke through to give the Valiants an unassisted goal after tapping in a rebound from the initial shot taken by junior defender Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College).
Freshman Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) took an interference penalty with under two minutes remaining in regulation and Utica took one of their own 24 seconds later to put four skaters on the ice for each side. Utica pulled its goalie Jennifer Hamel to give them a player advantage with five skaters to the Valiants' four. With the empty net at the other side of the rink Hutchinson put in her fifth of the season with exactly one minute remaining.
The Utica goal remained empty for the final 60 seconds and it proved to be useful as the Pioneers scored with 21 seconds to go to avoid being shutout. In net for Manhattanville, sophomore Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) missed yet another shutout by 21 seconds after losing a shutout with one second remaining earlier this season against Salve Regina on November 19.
Evans finished the game making 19 saves on 20 shots while collecting her third win of the season against one loss. Hamel needed to make 30 saves in the losing effort and allowed the one goal to Schill in the third period, her record falls to 5-4-0 on the season.
Offensively for the Valiants, Schill finished the game with a game-high seven shots while her line which included Hutchinson and senior Jackie Solomito (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Niagara University (CHA)) combined for a total of 13 shots. Nutkevitch also got involved in the offense taking three shots of her own. Total shots were in favor of the Valiants at a 32-20 clip.
