Box Score 2 UNION, N.J. – Day two of the Kean Invitational brought no more success to the Manhattanville women's volleyball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants fell to Commonwealth Conference foe Alvernia by a 3-1 (26-24, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13) score and then to Muhlenberg, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-12), at Harwood Arena.
Freshman
Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) led Manhattanville offensively at the invitational for the second day in a row, posting a team-high 21 kills in seven sets. Sophomore
Mirusha Mujaj (Bronx, N.Y./Yorktown) added 13 kills in the two matches, while sophomore
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) was named to the All-Tournament team after registering 36 more digs on the day.
Alfonso led all players in the first match of the day against Alvernia with 14 kills and also added 19 digs for an impressive double-double. Sophomore
Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) also had a double-double with 16 assists and 19 digs, and Casino led all players with a match-best 25 digs.
The Valiants were efficient offensively in the first set, posting 12 kills and recording only four errors, but came up two points short in a 26-24 loss that put them behind by a set. The squad came back to extend the match with a 25-23 win in the third set, but Alvernia committed just one attack error in the fourth set to close out the match.
In the second match of the day, both Manhattanville and Muhlenberg had 10 attack errors, but the Mules had 34 kills to the Valiants' 17 in picking up the straight-set win.
Alfonso again was the Valiants' top performer with seven kills and eight digs, followed by Mujaj with four kills. Ferreiras and freshman
Carly Conca (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) shared the setting duties and picked up five assists apiece, while Casino paced the squad again with 11 digs.
Manhattanville (8-20) will close out the road portion of its 2012 schedule on Tuesday night, as the Valiants get back to Freedom Conference play against Wilkes starting at 7 p.m.
