Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Manhattanville women's volleyball team went up against arguably its toughest opponent of the season tonight at Eastern Gym, as the Valiants were swept by AVCA #19 Eastern, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-12), in Tuesday's Freedom Conference matchup.
Coming off just their third loss of the year over the weekend to Stevenson, Eastern put together a strong outing against Manhattanville, recording 37 kills and 12 errors for a .294 hitting percentage. Conversely, the Valiants struggled offensively against the solid Eagle defense, recording only nine kills and committing 16 errors as a team.
Eastern's Katrina Pisch led all players with 11 kills and one error for .500 hitting, followed by Erin Hillman with eight kills and one error and Lauren Sproles with seven kills without an error. Amy Guarino added five kills, six digs and 22 assists for the home team as well.
Freshman
Patricia Alfonso (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertoriqueno de Ninas) led the Valiants with four kills, followed by junior
Susy Camaj (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) with three. Camaj and sophomore
Alyssa Casino (Rye Brook, N.Y./Maria Regina) tied for the team lead with eight digs apiece, while sophomore
Veronica Ferreiras (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Malverne) also chipped in seven assists.
The Valiants struggled out of the gates, recording just two kills in the opening set. After doubling both their kills (four) and errors (eight) in the second frame, the visitors saw Eastern close out the match with an incredibly efficient third set in which the home team registered 16 kills and only two errors for a .467 hitting percentage.
Manhattanville (8-12, 1-3 Freedom) will get right back into action tomorrow night, as the Valiants travel to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a 7 p.m. matchup.
