Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team dropped their season opener to the D3Hockey.com No. 2 Plattsburgh Cardinals on Saturday evening by the score of 2-1 in overtime. Senior
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) score the game-tying goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to the extra period.
The Valiants started off the game with two shots to open the game off the stick of Little, but neither were successful. The Cardinals then rattled off five straight shots of their own with four of the five being stopped by junior
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)), while the fifth was blocked in front by the Valiant defense. Plattsburgh went on to outshoot Manhattanville 7-5 in the opening session.
During the second period of play Manhattanville took their first penalty of the season as freshman
Brighid Noone (Quincy, Mass./Milton Academy) was sent off, but the Valiant penalty kill unit was up to the task as they held Plattsburgh to no shots. Manhattanville also had a chance short-handed as senior
Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) took a chance during the disadvantage.
Just over two minutes later the first goal of the game was scored as Plattsburgh was on the board first when Jenny Kistner got one past Evans to put the Cardinals up by a 1-0 score. The Valiants got their first power play chance of the season at the 13:51 mark of the period, but the advantage was cut short when Manhattanville committed a penalty of their own just 51 seconds into the power play.
Manhattanville also had a power play chance carry over from the second to the third period but were unsuccessful on the chance once again. As the third period moved along the Valiants were inches away from tying the game when sophomore
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) rang a shot off the post.
The Valiants had two more power play chances in the final five minutes of regulation, and while unsuccessful on the first the second was different. Head coach
David Turco had pulled Evans for an extra skater with just 33 seconds to go in regulation, Plattsburgh was then called for a penalty 14 seconds later at 19:41.
After losing the ensuing faceoff Manhattanville got the puck back as Morrison passed to senior captain
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)), who then passed to Little who sent the puck past Cardinal goalkeeper Sydney Aveson to knot the game up at one with only 12 seconds to go in the regulation period.
In overtime the Cardinals were awarded a power play chance just 1:31 into the extra session, and capitalized on the chance exactly one minute later as Teal Gove scored the overtime game-winner to give Plattsburgh the victory.
For the game Manhattanville was 1-for-4 on extra skater chances, while Plattsburgh was 1-for-3. Final shots on goal were in favor of the Cardinals at 26-15 for the 62:31 of time needed to complete the game.
In goal, Evans takes the loss to fall to 0-1-0 on the young season after making 24 saves and allowing the two Cardinal tallies. Picking up the win for Plattsburgh was Aveson, who yielded the one Manhattanville marker and making 14 saves on the evening.
