Box Score ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Manhattanville hung with perennial Freedom Conference contender Eastern for a full 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field, but one Eagle strike off a corner kick and a late unfriendly bounce off the post were enough to deny the Valiants a victory in a hard-fought 1-0 defeat.
The only goal of the afternoon came in the 55th minute of play, when Eastern's Ashley Graybill scored directly off a corner kick to put the home team up by a goal. The scored capped a stretch of four corner kicks in less than two minutes for the Eagles.
After Graybill's score, Manhattanville had a few chances at goal, the best of which came off the foot of freshman forward
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South). In the 81st minute, DeMarco blasted a ball off the post and out, and that turned out to be the team's best and last chance at goal for the remainder of the afternoon.
Manhattanville went into the half scoreless despite Eastern holding a 5-1 edge in shots, as freshman
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) stopped all three shots she faced and the Valiant defensive unit held strong.
Eastern posted a 13-5 advantage in shots for the afternoon, as well as a decisive 10-1 edge in corner kicks taken.
Kraemer had a solid day in goal for the Valiants despite taking the loss, allowing just the one goal and turning aside seven shots. Eastern's Alysia Goodman earned the shutout win by stopping all three shots on goal she faced.
Manhattanville (5-6, 1-1 Freedom) will look to get back .500 overall and 2-1 in Freedom Conference play on Wednesday night, as the Valiants travel to Madison, N.J., for a meeting with FDU-Florham beginning at 7 p.m.
