Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Manhattanville women's hockey team picked up two more points in ECAC East Conference play as the team defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders by the score of 2-1 in Worcester, Mass. on Friday evening.
The Valiants got goals from seniors
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) and
Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) in the first and second periods respectively as Manhattanville went on to hold Holy Cross to one goal through the remainder of the contest.
During first period play Manhattanville was able to pull off the first two shots of the game, as sophomore
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) and senior
Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) took shots that never made it on target. The Valiants also got an early power play chance but were unable to capitalize despite taking three shots with the skater advantage.
After killing off a penalty of their own, Manhattanville came right back down the ice seven seconds later and put the puck into the back of the net as Taylor netted her first of the season. For Taylor, she was playing in her first game of the season as she recovered from an injury suffered during the spring. Classmate
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) picked up the assist on the first period tally.
Manhattanville was unable to rip a shot during its second power play chance of the period. After returning to even strength the Valiants and Crusaders skated to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead in favor of the road team.
Just 93 seconds into the second period, the Valiants opened up the margin as Morrison netted her team-leading second goal of the season in the team's fifth game of the year. Her unassisted tally was the 32nd of her career in her 84th career contest.
Over a minute and a half later, Holy Cross got on the board to cut the lead back down to one as Alex Campione snuck one past Manhattanville junior goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) to make the score 2-1.
The Crusaders had a chance to tie the game on another power play chance in the second, but Manhattanville's penalty kill proved to stump the power play unit of Holy Cross. Shots through 40 minutes of play were 15-11 in favor of the Crusaders.
In the third period Manhattanville had a golden opportunity to regain their two-goal lead as the Crusaders took a penalty, while already on the penalty kill to go down on a 5-on-3 disadvantage. Unfortunately for the Valiants, they were unable to sink their third goal of the game as Holy Cross killed off the chance as the Valiants took six shots on the chance.
Both sides had their chances down the final 10:30 of regulation with both sides picking up a pair of power play chances each. Manhattanville picked up only two shots on 2:39 of power play time. Holy Cross mustered just three shots on a full four minutes of power play time down the stretch of the contest.
The final horn sounded and Manhattanville skated away with the 2-1 victory despite being outshot 19-16 by their hosts. Faceoffs were in favor of the Valiants as they won 34-of-63; Manhattanville was 0-for-6 on the power play while Holy Cross was 0-for-4 on extra skater chances.
In goal, Evans picked up her second win of the year while stopping 18 shots as she improved to 2-2-1 on the season. Taking her first loss of the season was Krista Manzanares (3-1-0), after registering 14 saves and allowing both Manhattanville goals.
Manhattanville (2-2-1, 2-0-1 ECAC East) will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Salve Regina for a date with the Seahawks, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Holy Cross (3-2-1, 2-2-1 ECAC East) will also play tomorrow when they host Nichols beginning at 7:30 p.m.
