Asselstine's OT Winner Caps Wild Finish in No. 9 Valiants' 4-3 Win

Sophomore Sydney Asselstine scored her first career game-winning goal in Saturday's overtime winner.
Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) capped a wild final five minutes of hockey with the game-winning goal 1:14 into overtime as the 9th-ranked Manhattanville women's hockey team took down Salve Regina in a back-and-forth ECAC East Conference showdown on Saturday night at St. George's Rink.

Asselstine's game-winning score was the second tally of her career and came with an assist to seniors Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) and Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)). The sophomore beat Seahawk netminder Ali Muehlbronner 74 seconds into the extra period and extended the Valiants' unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) in the process.

Seniors Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) and Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) and sophomore Trenah Stauffer (Salmon, Idaho/Colorado Select (JWHL)) also scored for Manhattanville in the win, while senior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) led all players with two points on a pair of assists.

Manhattanville took a 2-1 lead into the third period of play after Occhionero and Little scored less than two minutes apart midway through the second stanza to give the visitors their first lead of the night.

But the goals started coming quickly as the minutes wound down. Danielle Phalon evened the score at two with 3:16 remaining in the period on the power play, but Manhattanville responded 90 seconds later with Stauffer's second goal of the year, which put the Valiants back ahead with 1:44 left in regulation.

However, the visitors could not hold that lead until the end of the period, as Taylor Shepherd scored with the extra skater on and 39 seconds remaining on the clock to knot up the score after 60 minutes of hockey.

In the overtime period, junior Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) made a pair of saves in the opening minute for Manhattanville to keep the game going. After Kehoe won a faceoff in the offensive zone, Taylor rang a shot off the pipe that would have ended it, but Asselstine cleaned up a loose puck in front of the Seahawks net to send the Valiants to the win.

For the night, Manhattanville posted a 45-38 edge in total shots. Both teams had plenty of chances on the power play, as the Valiants went 1 for 9 and the Seahawks went 1 for 9 with the man advantage.

Evans finished with a career-high 35 saves in the win for Manhattanville, while Muehlbronner turned aside 41 shots in a losing effort for Salve.

Manhattanville (3-2-1, 3-0-1 ECAC East) will step out of conference play on Tuesday night, as the Valiants travel south to take on Neumann in a non-conference contest starting at 7 p.m. from Aston, Pa.
