Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – In a game that was scheduled as the USCHO.com No. 9 Manhattanville women's hockey team's home opener, the Valiants took to the road and still got the same result they were looking for. The Valiants got goals from four different players as they defeated the UMass Boston Beacons by the score of 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
The first period saw very little offense as the Valiants and Beacons were unable to record and goals on the scoreboard. However chances were there for both sides as Manhattanville went 0-for-3 on power play chances, while UMass Boston went 0-for-2 on extra skater opportunities of their own.
The first 16 minutes of the second period saw very similar results as both teams had one power play chance each in the first half of the period. The deadlock on the score sheet was finally broken when senior
Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) picked up her first goal of the season after taking a pass from sophomore
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)) to put Manhattanville up by a 1-0 score heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, chances were aplenty for Manhattanville as they capitalized scoring three straight goals in the third period to balloon their lead up to 4-0. The first goal came off the stick of Traun, who picked up her first goal of the season after taking a pass from senior
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia), who extends her point streak to three games to start the season.
Just over four minutes later, senior
Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) found the back of the net for her first of the season after taking the pass from Morrison to put the Valiants up by three. Another two minutes later yet another senior scored for Manhattanville as
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) put up her first of the season, with Morrison also getting the helper on the fourth and final Valiant marker.
As the game wound down into the final seven minutes of regulation, UMass Boston broke the shutout on a nice rebound goal by Alli Greenberg, who took the puck right off of Manhattanville goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) and lifted it into the vacant net to make the score 4-1.
Manhattanville killed off the final 6:50 of ice time, including a 6-on-5 skating disadvantage when the Beacons pulled their goalkeeper, to hang on for the 4-1 victory.
In goal Evans picked up her first win to move to 1-2-0 on the season, after making another 22 saves on 23 UMass Boston shots. On the opposite end of the ice Casey Schaejbe made 18 saves in 58:06 of ice time while allowing all four Manhattanville goals.
The Valiants finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play as Traun's goal came with the advantage in the early stages of the third period. Meanwhile the Manhattanville penalty kill unit did its job in burning off the four penalties committed by the Valiants.
