Box Score ASTON, Pa. – The No. 9/9 Manhattanville women's hockey team held non-conference opponent Neumann to only eight shots on Tuesday evening as the Valiants defeated the Knights by a 4-0 score at Ice Works in Aston, Pa.
In the first period, both teams played to a pretty even period as the Valiants outshot their hosts by a 5-3 margin. However the major difference in the period was a shot off the stick of senior
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)), who found the back of the net on the power play to put Manhattanville up 1-0. Assists on Schill's goal were picked up by classmates
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia), and
Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)).
The second period saw one of Manhattanville's best defensive periods of the young season as they held Neumann to only one shot through the 20 minute frame. The Valiants scored their only even strength goal of the contest at the 8:38 mark of the period when sophomore
Sydney Asselstine (Hartington, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) picked up a goal in her second consecutive game to put Manhattanville up by a pair with as assist coming from classmate
Trenah Stauffer (Salmon, Idaho/Colorado Select (JWHL)).
Through the first two periods of play the Valiants had outshot their hosts by a 20-4 margin, including the 15-1 mark in favor of Manhattanville in the second period.
As the game shifted to the third period, Neumann registered a game-high four shots in the period. All of the shots were stopped by junior goalkeeper
Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter), who continues the impressive start to her career with three straight shutouts dating back to her freshman campaign.
Offensively in the third period Manhattanville netted two more tallies as senior assistant captain
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) picked up her third goal of the season on the power play, with the helpers being credited to classmate
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)), and Stauffer for her second of the night. The final Manhattanville goal came off the stick of Little, who scored her second goal of the year on an unassisted effort.
For Little, it was her 13th career shorthanded goal, as she now is 10 better than any player in Manhattanville history.
Final statistics were well in favor of Manhattanville as they led in terms of shots at a 29-8 margin. The Valiants were 2-for-5 on the power play with eight shots, while Neumann was 0-for-5 with all four shots in the third period on the man advantage.
Shaughnessy earned the win in her first game of the season to go to 1-0 on the year after picking up the eight saves and not allowing the goal to extend her streak to 179:43 of shutout hockey in three career games. On the losing end was Shannon Donnelly, who picked up 25 saves while allowing all four Manhattanville goals.
Manhattanville (4-2-1, 3-0-1 ECAC East) will return to play in 10 days when they make their long-awaited “home” opener at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, Conn. as they take on Plymouth State on November 30 at 7:00 p.m. with game coverage available on GoValiants.TV. Neumann (2-4-1, 2-2-0 ECAC West) will return to play against No. 4/1 Elmira on November 1 in Aston, Pa.
