Women's Hockey Puts Up Six Goals in Matchup with Southern Maine

Mary Rose Morrison had two goals and an assist in Saturday's conference win over Southern Maine.
Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – The Manhattanville women's ice hockey team defeated the Southern Maine Huskies on Saturday morning by the score of 6-1. The Valiants got two goals each from seniors Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) and Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia), as junior Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) picked up her fourth win in goal for Manhattanville.

The Valiants jumped on the board quickly as they scored just 67 seconds into the contest as Morrison picked up her first of the game off of an assist from sophomore Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)). Down the latter stages of the first period Manhattanville had three power play chances, and while unable to score on the first two, Little ended that with a power play tally to give Manhattanville a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

At the start of the second period, the Huskies began to play with a little more tempo especially after starting the period with a full two-minute power play chance. Southern Maine had yet another power play chance but was unable to capitalize, however they gave Manhattanville a power play chance after an interference call and the Valiants were able to find the back of the net.

Sophomore Trenah Stauffer (Salmon, Idaho/Colorado Select (JWHL)) blasted a shot from the top of the zone and had the puck deflect off of a Southern Maine skater on the puck's way to the net and eventually found its way past Huskies goalkeeper Jenn Fuller to put Manhattanville up 3-0.

Southern Maine refused to go down quietly though as less than three minutes later the Huskies capitalized off of a costly Manhattanville turnover deep in their own end, and Sarah Timmons finished it off as she went top shelf against Evans to break the shutout streak.

Known more for her ability on the penalty kill, Little score the next goal on a power play chance as she shot the puck past Fuller to give the Valiants their three-goal lead back. Classmates Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) and Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) added assists on the goal at 15:02 into the second period.

As the game moved along into the third period, Morrison picked up her second goal of the contest, as Traun helped out on Morrison's tally for the second time and Occhionero picked up the secondary assist. Later in the third period, senior Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) notched her second goal of the season as she picked up a short pass from Taylor from in front of the net after a hard shot from the point from freshman defender Brighid Noone (Quincy, Mass./Milton Academy).

The goal capped the scoring for Manhattanville as they won the contest going away with a 6-1 edge. Overall in terms of shots the Valiants outnumbered the Huskies by a 41-16 edge, and also capitalized on their power play chances as they went 3-for-7, Southern Maine finished going 0-for-3 on the game.

In goal Evans earns the victory to move to 4-2-1 on the year after making 15 saves and allowing the lone Huskies tally in the second period. Taking the loss for Southern Maine was Liz Bergstrom (2-2-2) after allowing the pair of first period goals and making 13 saves in the process. Fuller took over for the final 40 minutes of play and allowed four more Manhattanville goals and made a total of 22 stops.
