Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – The No. 8/6 Manhattanville women's ice hockey team allowed three third period goals to the No. 1 Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday evening, as Plattsburgh defeated Manhattanville by a score of 3-1 in the final game of the 2012 Fall Semester.
Manhattanville's lone goal was scored in the second period by senior
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) to put Manhattanville up 1-0 at the time, but Plattsburgh answered with three unanswered in the final period to pull out the non-conference victory.
The game started off with both teams playing fairly tentatively against one another, as both sides played to avoid penalties or icings, knowing a mistake against one another could prove costly. During the first 20 minutes Plattsburgh outshot Manhattanville by a 4-3 differential heading to the second.
After the break Manhattanville was awarded with a 5-on-3 power play chance just over four minutes into the frame. The first Plattsburgh minor penalty came to an end as Manhattanville continued with a 5-on-4 advantage, senior
Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) sent a cross-ice pass to classmate
Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)), who sent one towards the net. After the puck kicked off of a player in front of the net, Occhionero picked up the puck and planted it home top-shelf to give Manhattanville the 1-0 lead.
The Valiants held onto the lead through the remainder of the second period and took their lone-goal lead into the second intermission. After 40 minutes of play shots were in favor of the Cardinals at 15-10, while Manhattanville was 1-for-3 on the power play entering the third period.
During the third Manhattanville killed off a penalty that carried over from the second period, but that was one of the lone highlights of the stanza as Plattsburgh took control of the period.
Just under five minutes into the third, defender Alyssa Parke took a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and past Manhattanville junior goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) to tie the game at one apiece. Over five minutes later the Cardinals found the back of the net again after some crisp passing, including a drop pass to Morgan MacInnis to give Plattsburgh its first lead of the game at 2-1 with 9:32 left in the game.
A costly Manhattanville giveaway gave Plattsburgh its third goal of the game as Chelsea VanGlahn stripped Manhattanville of the puck at center ice and raced into the offensive end to give the Cardinals a 3-on-4 shorthanded goal to cap off the scoring for the evening.
In the end, final shots were in favor of Plattsburgh at 26-15. On the power play, Manhattanville finished at a 1-for-6 clip while Plattsburgh was held to 0-for-4 on extra skater chances.
In goal Evans took her first loss in over a month to fall to 4-3-1 on the season, after making 23 saves and allowing all three Cardinal goals. On the other side of the ice Sydney Aveson was forced to make 14 saves and allowed just one goal as she remains unbeaten on the year at 7-0-1.
Manhattanville (6-3-1, 5-0-1 ECAC East) will not play again until the new year, when it travels to take on nationally ranked Elmira on January 4 at 3:00 p.m. Plattsburgh (10-0-1, 5-0-0 ECAC West) becomes the first team in Division III hockey to get to 10 wins and will look to add to that total in its next game when it takes on Norwich on January 6 at 4:00 p.m. from the Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
