Men's Soccer Blanks Widener in 1-0 Victory

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Moshee Kelyana (Scarborough, Ontario/Brebeuf College) scored the lone tally in the eighth minute of play and that's all what was needed as the Manhattanville Valiants men's soccer team shut out the Widener Pride by a 1-0 score in their opening contest of the 2012 season.

After a Widener turnover in their defensive zone, Kelyana took advantage and sent one to the back of the net to give Manhattanville the early 1-0 lead at the 7:20 mark of the first period. Just under seven minutes later the Pride sent their second shot of the game on goal which was stopped by freshman goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) to record his first collegiate save.

The Valiants ended up being outshot in the opening period by a 5-4 difference, but led in the most important stat on the scoreboard with their 1-0 edge.

During the fourth minute of the second half, the Valiants committed a foul inside the box which resulted in a penalty kick for Widener. Silber turned out to be up for the task as he stopped the ball in a high pressure situation for the freshman.

Over the remainder of the game Widener took three shots while Manhattanville added two more themselves for game totals of 9-6 in favor of the Pride. The Pride also led in corner kicks by a 6-2 margin.

Earning his first career win was Silber (1-0) as he made four saves while picking up the shutout. Taking the loss was Jakub Valdner (0-1) who allowed the one goal, and was forced to make one save on the evening.

Manhattanville (1-0) returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon when they take on host Swarthmore with the game slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. in Swarthmore, Pa.
