Men's Soccer Falters Against Vassar, 3-1

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team dropped a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon to the Vassar Brewers by the score of 3-1. In the game senior Moshee Kelyana (Scarborough, Ontario/Brebeuf College) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Vassar started out the game with a strong offensive outburst as they collected the first four shots of the contest through the first 10 minutes of action. On the fourth shot the Brewers took the 1-0 lead as Zachary Nasipak was able to shoot one past Manhattanville freshman netminder Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East).

Less than a minute later, Kelyana was able to knot the game up after receiving a pass from classmate Marco Blasetti (Yonkers, N.Y./Rye Country Day) on a nice through ball and later drove it home to even up the score at one apiece. For Kelyana it was his fifth goal of the season, setting a new career-high for the senior who had four goals during his freshman campaign.

A few minutes later Vassar came back down the field and scored once again to re-take a one goal lead. In the 31st minute Vassar added to their goal total by netting their third goal of the game on a ball that was slotted through to the bottom right corner of the goal. The Brewers got two more shots through the final three minutes of game time to increase their first half total to 12, against Manhattanville's four first half chances.

In the second half Manhattanville muscled off the first shot of the period as senior Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) took a shot that went wide of the goal. Over the next 20 minutes, Vassar rattled off four more unanswered shots before Olazabal sent one over the crossbar for the Valiants.

The final 28 minutes saw Manhattanville outshoot their hosts by a 4-0 margin, including Olazabal hitting the crossbar in the 87th minute of play. Unfortunately for the Valiants time was working against them, and Vassar came away with the 3-1 win.

Final shot totals were in favor of the Brewers at a 17-8 margin, while corner kicks were in favor of the Valiants at 4-2.

In goal Ryan Grimme earned the victory for Vassar as he was forced to make only one save to earn his fourth win of the season against no loses thus far. Taking the loss for Manhattanville was Silber who allowed three Brewer tallies while stopping six shots, the Valiants also made one save defensively in the contest.

Manhattanville (3-2-1) will return home to GoValiants.com Field this Saturday when they play host to the Drew Rangers at 2:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast live on GoValiants.TV. Vassar (5-1) also returns to play on Saturday as they take on a Final Four team from a season ago when they host the Oneonta Red Dragons at 1:00 p.m.
