Men's Soccer Ties Drew, 0-0

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team played to a draw for the second consecutive Saturday. This time the Valiants stayed even with the Drew Rangers throughout the contest as the teams settled for a 0-0 tie. In goal freshman Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made a career-high 13 save effort to preserve the draw.

Drew started the game off with five shots through the first 13 minutes of the contest, only one of which was on target that. At the end of the 14th minute of play, senior Eros Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) registered the first shot of the afternoon for the Valiants that was denied by Drew goalkeeper Michael Reyes.

The Rangers continued to rattle off several shots in bunches with very few on target. The Valiants' second shot of the afternoon was taken by senior Moshee Kelyana (Scarborough, Ontario/Brebeuf College). His right-footed shot was denied by Reyes, as Kelyana was held off the score sheet for the first time in five contests after picking up goals in each of the team's last four games.

The physical play between the two teams continued through the waning 17 minutes of the first half with neither side unable to put one into the goal as the teams went into halftime with no goals on the board. Shots at the intermission were 13-5 in favor of the Rangers, with Drew getting three shots on goal to Manhattanville's two.

In the 58th minute of play senior Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) recorded his lone shot on goal of the game, as once again it was stopped by Reyes. Both goalkeepers continued their excellent play through the regulation time, when at the end of 90 minutes of play Singson had eight saves to Reyes' six.

In the first overtime period the Valiants got two quick corner kick chances but were unable to convert on either attempt. Moments later the Rangers came down the field and Singson picked up yet another save on a well-struck shot by Ricardo Castro of Drew.

The second overtime period began with a Drew corner kick that the Rangers possessed the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sent the ball through traffic that rang off the right post and out of harm's way. The Rangers regained possession and about 30 seconds later sent one on goal once again that Singson picked up a save on. The final horn sounded on the afternoon as both teams were unable to convert on their combined 20 shots on goal.

Final shot totals were in favor of Drew at 34-14; however the scoring chances were fairly even as many of the Rangers' shots were sent off-target. Corner kicks were also in favor of the Rangers as they took 11 to Manhattanville's five.

In goal Singson made 13 saves to earn his second tie of the season, as he remains unbeaten on the year at 1-0-2. On the other end of the field Reyes made seven saves to take his first tie of the season, as he now stands at 3-0-1 on the 2012 season.

Manhattanville (3-2-2) will be back in action a week from today when they travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Stevenson Mustangs with kickoff of the game slated to take place at 5:00 p.m. Drew (4-1-2) will be back on the field in Patchogue, N.Y. when they travel to take on St. Joseph's on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
