Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team opened up their 2012 Freedom Conference season with a win over the King's (Pa.) Monarchs on Saturday afternoon by the score of 1-0. The lone goal of the contest was scored by junior
Kyle Cassidy (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) in the second half of play.
King's started the game off with a quick shot that was high and wide over the net occupied by Valiant freshman
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) at the 1:32 point early in the contest. Manhattanville picked up their first shot of the game several minutes later as senior
Erick Olazabal (Milton, Ontario/Bishop Reding) sent a header on goal that was stopped as well.
The Monarchs went on a bit of a roll as they outshot their hosts by a 6-1 margin through an 18 minute segment of the game, and went on to outshoot Manhattanville at an 11-5 clip through the first 45 minutes of play. Heading into halftime corner kicks were even at two apiece.
After a break in the locker room the Valiants came out as if they were a different team for the second half as they outshot the Monarchs by a 3-2 differential through the first 32 minutes of the second half. The third shot of the half for Manhattanville came off of a corner kick that was sent to the center of the six-yard box by Olazabal and into the goal off of a Cassidy shot to put Manhattanville on top, 1-0.
The two teams played out the remainder of regulation exchanging shots with one another as the Valiants finished with six during the second half to the Monarchs' four. Game totals were still in favor of the road team as King's led 15-11, Manhattanville had the final edge in corner kicks at 4-3.
Earning his second win of the season was Singson (2-2-2, 1-0-0 Freedom) after making seven saves on the afternoon and also picked up his second individual shutout of the season to give him 2 1/2 on the year. Taking the loss was Brandon Raynor (2-1-0, 0-1-0 Freedom) who stopped six shots while yielding the lone tally of the game.
Manhattanville (4-2-2, 1-0-0 Freedom) welcomes in one of their toughest non-conference opponents of the season as nationally ranked Rutgers-Camden comes to GoValiants.com Field for a Wednesday evening matchup slated for 7:30 p.m. Coverage of the game will be available on GoValiants.TV. King's (5-3-1, 0-1-0 Freedom) will also play a non-conference opponent in their next contest when they travel to Collegeville, Pa. to take on Ursinus at 7:00 p.m on Tuesday.
