Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scored two goals in the first five minutes and never looked back as the Engineers picked up a 5-0 victory over the Manhattanville women's soccer team in game two of the 2012 Valiant Classic, hosted by Manhattanville at GoValiants.com Field on Friday night.
The game was delayed more than an hour due to thunder and lightning in the area that also completely wiped out the first scheduled game of the day between MIT and Eastern Connecticut State, and it seemed to take the Valiants a few minutes more once the game actually started to get going.
RPI took advantage of that early-game lull, as Shannon Maguire and Giana Abballe scored 2:27 apart to give the visitors a two-goal edge before the 5:00 mark of the opening half. Maguire started the scoring at the 2:32 mark, launching a low shot from long distance that skimmed past freshman keeper
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), and Abballe followed at 4:59 by redirecting a shot from Kirsten Bombardier into the net.
Rensselaer struck two more times before the break. Abballe netted her second in the 26th minute after touching the ball past Kraemer and slotting it into the open net, followed by Taylor Korytko volleying home a cross in front of the Valiant net just 52 seconds before halftime.
The Engineers went into the break with a 7-2 edge in shots, as well as a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half did not see much improvement for the home team, as RPI took 10 shots to Manhattanville's three and also earned the only four corner kicks of the half. Kate Edwards capped the scoring in the 79th minute with her first goal of the season.
For the match, RPI posted a 17-5 edge in shots. Deanna Amoia played the first 80:27 and made two saves to earn her third win of the season for the visitors. For the home team, Kraemer took her first collegiate loss by allowing three goals on four shots in 30:53, while sophomore
Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass./Vermont Academy) came on in relief and allowed two goals on four shots in her collegiate debut.
Manhattanville (2-1-0) and RPI (2-1-0) will both return to action later this weekend at the Valiant Classic. The Valiants are off until Sunday, when they host MIT for a 1 p.m. contest that will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV. The Engineers will return to GoValiants.com Field tomorrow to take on Eastern Connecticut State beginning at 3:30 p.m.
