Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 8 Manhattanville women's hockey team dropped an ECAC East Conference matchup to the UMass Boston Beacons by a score of 5-3 on Saturday afternoon from the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
The Valiants were looking for the season-series sweep over the Beacons, with both contests being played in Boston after the scheduled home game for Manhattanville was forced to the road back in early November.
The first period was evenly matched between the two sides as both sides went 0-for-2 on power play chances with the Valiants outshooting the Beacons by a 9-6 margin.
As opposed to the first period, the second period saw plenty of scoring action as both sides scored two goals apiece. Manhattanville opened up the scoring as sophomore Michelle Meggiolaro picked up her fourth goal of the season after taking a pass from classmate
Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)).
UMass Boston tied the game exactly three minutes later at the 6:01 mark into the second period when Kayla Kiernan netted a power play goal to knot the game up at one. Kelsey MacIsaac and Emily LaRossa picked up the helpers on the goal.
Several minutes later Manhattanville got a power play chance of their own as senior
Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) put home her second goal of the season, with assists on the go-ahead goal coming from classmates
Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) and
Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)).
The scoring finally came to an end in the second period as the Beacons tied the gam up once again at two when Samantha Fallon was able to send the puck past Manhattanville junior goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)), with MacIsaac picking up the helper for the second straight goal.
UMass Boston kept up the offensive tempo and scored the game's next two goals as Fallon netted her second straight of the contest, followed by Emily Harrison at the 15:05 mark of the third to put UMass Boston up by a 4-2 score.
A few minutes later Manhattanville was given a power play chance and once again capitalized, as it was senior
Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)) to pick up her fourth goal in the team's last three contests. Morrison and Traun each picked up their second helpers of the contest to help the Valiants pull back within one.
With 59 seconds left in the contest the Valiants pulled Evans from the net in favor of an extra attacker, but were able to take one shot as senior
Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) sent one on goal that was stopped by Beacon goalkeeper Casey Schaejbe for her final save of the night.
UMass Boston got back possession of the puck and Katie Loiselle was able to put it into the vacant net to ice the game in favor of the Beacons at a 5-3 score, on the goal Sarahanne Cavolo and MacIsaac picked up assists.
The Valiants ended the game going 2-of-6 on the power play, while the Beacons went 1-of-4. Faceoffs were also in favor of Manhattanville after winning 30-of-44 from the dot.
Earning the win for UMass Boston was Schaejbe, after making 30 saves and allowing three goals as she improved to 4-7-1 on the season. Evans suffered the loss to fall to 7-6-1 on the season after allowing four goals and stopping 12 other shots sent her way.
