Box Score PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The No. 7/6 Manhattanville women's hockey team started off the 2013 calendar year for the athletic department with a loss during a Friday matinee game against the No. 3/4 Elmira Soaring Eagles by the score of 3-0. Elmira's Ashley Ryan scored all three goals, including a power play and a short-handed goal for the only tallies of the contest.
The Valiants started out of the gate quickly registering the first three shots of the contest, all of which were turned away by Soaring Eagle netminder Lauren Sullivan. Manhattanville was also given the game's first power play opportunity but were unable to convert on the extra-skater advantage.
As the first period moved along both teams had power play chances, but neither side was able to find the back of the net as the first period came to an end. Shots through 20 minutes of play were in favor of the home team at 11-6.
The second period saw fewer numbers in terms of shots, but better quality chances for Elmira. With just under six minutes to go in the period Elmira's Ashton Hogan had a breakaway chance against Valiant junior goalkeeper
Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)), who made the initial save, then a second save on a rebound attempt to keep the game scoreless.
Moments later Elmira controlled play in the offensive zone, Madison Johnson dropped a pass to the top of the zone where Tanis Lamoureaux corralled the puck. Lamoureaux threw the puck into the slot in front of the net and Ryan sent the puck past Evans to put the Soaring Eagles up 1-0.
The two teams skated through the final five minutes of the second period with the score holding at 1-0, while shots were entirely in favor of Elmira at a 12-0 margin for a 40-minute total of 23-6.
In the third period, Elmira picked up the first four shots of the period, all turned aside by Evans. As play continued, Manhattanville was awarded another power play chance, junior
Caitlyn Beauvais (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)) picked up a shot on the advantage to break the Soaring Eagles' streak of shots.
Less than a minute after the power play ended, the Valiants went right back to the man-advantage. Manhattanville used its' timeout prior to the start of the power play in attempts to spark the offense, but it was unsuccessful as the Valiants were held to no shots on the power play.
With under 7 minutes to go, senior
Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) had an opportunity to tie the game up after picking up a pass and making her way into the offensive zone with one defender to beat. Trying to beat the one defender she took an unbalanced shot, then got her own rebound but again Sullivan was up to the task for Elmira.
Ryan took control of the game for the Soaring Eagles down the stretch of the contest as she scored twice more in the final 3:30 of action. Her second goal came as she took the puck from the boards into the slot, and took a quick wrist shot that beat Evans to increase the lead to 2-0.
With two minutes to go, and the Valiants attacking in the offensive zone, the puck trickled out to center ice. Ryan grabbed the bouncing puck and skated into the offensive zone all-alone and beat Evans glove-side to notch the hat trick.
The goal sealed the victory for Elmira, who finished the game with 33 shots including six from Ryan. Manhattanville ended the contest with 11 shots, all of which were turned away by Sullivan. Evans on the year falls to 4-4-1 this season after her 30-save effort.
