Morrison, Schill Score as No. 10 Valiants Double-Up Camels, 2-1

Sophomore Rachael Morrison scored her first career goal on Tuesday evening against Connecticut College.
Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – The Manhattanville women's ice hockey team snapped its losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Connecticut College Camels on Tuesday evening from the Terry Conners Rink. For Manhattanville sophomore Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) and senior Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) scored to help the Valiants to a victory in their final non-conference game of the regular season.

The game started off sluggish as both teams tried to find any type of momentum, the Valiants opened the contest outshooting the Camels by an 8-4 differential. However, Connecticut College swung the play of the game back in its favor and finished off the period outshooting Manhattanville by a 7-2 margin for a first period edge in shots at 11-10.

With no scoring in the first period, the teams switched ends for the second period and just three minutes into the stanza the Valiants were first to find the back of the net. Senior Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) made her way towards the net along the right wing, and then dropped a pass to her left where Morrison was waiting for it then flipped it towards the net and made its way through traffic for the opening goal of the contest. The tally was the sophomore defenders first career goal in her 36th career contest.

As play continued through the second period, both teams missed chances on the power play to get the puck to the back of the net. At 15:55 of the second period, the Camels were called for a slashing penalty that sent Sam Schoeneberger to the penalty box. After a turnover by Manhattanville in the neutral zone gave the puck to Ariel DiPasquale of Connecticut College, DiPasquale sent a quick pass to Caroline Corbett, who picked the top right corner of the net to tie the game at one on the short-handed goal.

In the final minute of the second period, Manhattanville had yet another power play chance and made up for its mistake a few minutes earlier. After some swift passing between senior Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)), sophomore Alla Traun (Edina, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds (JWHL)), and senior Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)), the puck was thrown towards the net where senior Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) tried to stuff it home. After the attempt failed, Kehoe backhanded the puck across to goal mouth, where Schill buried it to put Manhattanville up for good at 2-1 with 9.8 seconds remaining in the period. For Sidjak, it was her second assist of the game and team-leading seventh of the year.

The third period saw action play almost identical to play in the first period as Manhattanville controlled much of the play early on, taking nine of the period's first 11 shots. After the Camels earned yet another power play chance at the 7:46 point of the third period, momentum swung back in favor of the road team as Connecticut College outshot Manhattanville 8-2 down the stretch of the contest.

The Camels pulled goalkeeper Kelsie Fralick through the final 1:46 in favor of a sixth attacker but were only able to muster one shot that was stopped by Valiant sophomore netminder Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter). With 0.9 seconds left on the clock senior Alyssa Taylor (Craik, Saskatchewan/Sait Polytechnic (ACAC)) threw the puck on target towards the vacant net from center ice but the final horn sounded before the puck crossed the goal line, as the Valiants came away with the 2-1 win.

Final shots on goal were in favor of Manhattanville with a 24-20 differential, as final faceoff numbers were also in favor of Manhattanville at a 34-17 clip. The Valiants finished the game 1-for-5 on the man-advantage, while the Camels went 0-for-5 on its extra skater chances.

In goal Shaughnessy earned the victory to improve to 2-0-0 on the season after making 19 saves and allowing one goal, the first goal allowed in her career over four games. Suffering the loss was Fralick to fall to 2-3-0 on the year after stopping 22 shots and allowing both Manhattanville tallies.
