Box Score MAHWAH, N.J. – In its final tune-up before the start of Freedom Conference play this weekend, the Manhattanville women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Ramapo in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at the Ramapo Athletic Center.
Sophomore
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) had the lone goal of the game for Manhattanville (3-8), while Katie Popowych and Liz Samimi had the scores for Ramapo (3-7).
The Roadrunners did not waste much time in jumping out to an early lead, scoring on the game's third shot a mere 4:14 into the contest. After sophomore
Quinn Nicolich (Salt Lake City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) fired the first shot of the half, Ramapo attempted the next 10 – including Popowych's tally – to take a 1-0 lead into the half. The lead could have been a lot more if not for freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), who made seven saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep the match close.
Ramapo again started strong in the second half, with Samimi doubling her squad's lead 2:26 into the half. Manhattanville did strike back, as DeMarco scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year a few minutes later, but the Valiants could not get the equalizer – despite coming inches away when DeMarco rang a shot off the post in the 87th minute.
The home team posted an 18-3 edge in shots on the day, including a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. Diemicke suffered the loss despite making nine saves in 55:31 of action before sophomore
Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came on to make one save over the final 34:29.
Manhattanville, which has just one non-conference match left on its 2013 schedule, will begin the all-important Freedom Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants host DeSales in the second game of a home tripleheader at GoValiants.com Field starting at 2:30 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV beginning at approximately 2:25 p.m.
