Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team was able to score an impressive victory over Wilkes University on Saturday, winning by a score of 3-2 at GoValiants.com Field. The win, coming on Senior Day, was punctuated by a beautiful goal coming off the header of senior midfielder
Eduardo Salgado (Houston, Texas/YES College Prep).
The weather was crisp, the sky was blue, and the Valiant faithful were out en masse today to support the men's soccer team on Senior Day as the team celebrated Salgado and classmate Thomas Wagner (Guatemala City, Guatemala/German School).
The match was closely contested and was passionately fought by both sides. The scoring began early as Manhattanville earned a penalty kick exactly nine minutes into the match as Wilkes committed a handball inside of the box. Freshman forward Dan Lorandini (Garden City Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) calmly placed the penalty shot low and out of the reach of Wilkes goalkeeper Dave Marr.
Just two and a half minutes later, freshman midfielder Ryan Kenny (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made a run down the left side of the pitch and crossed in a beautiful ball which Salgado headed into the near corner past Marr for a 2-0 Manhattanville lead. It wasn't until the 24-minute mark that Wilkes was able to get on the board, as Wilkes senior forward Tyler Young capitalized on a set piece and headed a corner kick into the net from about eight yards out.
Just as Wilkes appeared to be making a comeback, junior Yeyson Caballeros (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax) took a ball that was crossed into the box by freshman Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and made a difficult short angle shot into the far netting to give the Valiants a 3-1 lead.
The Valiants took the 3-1 lead into the second half. In the 67th minute, Wilkes senior forward Michael Turner took a through ball, dribbled past the defense and struck a ball by sophomore goalkeeper Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) to make the match 3-2. But that was all that Singson would allow for the rest of the night, as Singson, who registered five saves, and the Valiant defense shut down the Colonels for the remainder of the evening.
Wilkes ended the match with a 14-7 edge in shots as well as a 13-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Manhattanville will close out the 2013 season next Saturday, as the Valiants travel to Delaware Valley for a 2:30 p.m. matchup with the Aggies.
