Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Rebecca Breve (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/American School of Tegucigalpa) tallied her third goal of the season in the 70th minute to even the score as the Manhattanville women's soccer team played Eastern Connecticut State to a 1-1 (2OT) draw in the final home game of the fall season, played on a chilly Wednesday evening at GoValiants.com Field.
Breve's strike for Manhattanville (4-11-2) followed a strike by the Warriors' Whitney Mantel, who put Eastern Connecticut (8-7-0) on top in the 59th minute of the contest. The rest of the match belonged to the goalkeepers, as Valiant freshman
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) made three saves while ECSU's Chelsea Santos turned aside four shots.
The first half was mostly a possession battle between the two squads, as the ball remained in the midfield for a majority of the frame. Eastern Connecticut had a 3-1 edge in total shots and a 1-0 margin in shots on target, but the teams went into halftime without a score.
The match started to open up considerably at the start of the second stanza, with both teams getting some decent chances toward goal. Kaitlin Thibodeau nearly got Eastern Connecticut on the board in the 51st minute, but her header off a corner kick was cleared off the line by sophomore
Christie Freer (Southington, Conn./Southington), who was manning the right post.
The scoreless tie remained for eight more minutes before the visitors got on the board first, when Thibodeau played a square ball to the top of the box to a waiting Mantel, who took one touch before slotting the ball into the low left corner for her third score of the year.
But the Valiants did not go away, getting the equalizer in the 70th minute to knot the score at one. Breve and classmate
Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) played a nice give-and-go to free Breve at the left side of the box, and she managed to chip the ball over the head of Santos from a very tough angle for her third score of the year.
The Valiants had a few other chances in the remainder of regulation, including an adept give-and-go between DeMarco and junior
Tori Lettieri (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) that resulted in a Lettieri shot creeping just over the crossbar in the 80th minute. But neither team could find a second goal, sending the game into extra time.
Extra time saw very few chances for either side, as the squads walked off with the 1-1 tie. For the match, Eastern Connecticut held a 15-8 edge in total shots, with shots on goal even at five apiece.
Manhattanville will conclude the 2013 season on Saturday morning, as the Valiants travel to Delaware Valley for a Freedom Conference matchup beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Doylestown.
