Men's Soccer Drops Freedom Opener to DeSales, 2-0

Box Score

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of DeSales at GoValiants.com Field on Saturday evening.  It was a frustrating loss for the Valiants as they are now 0-1 in Freedom Conference play.

The scoring started early as DeSales' freshman forward Wes Frebel was able to connect on a ball that was crossed into the box by junior midfielder Mikel Lazama.  The Bulldogs caught the Valiants sleeping early as Frebel was uncovered and easily put the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Willie Silber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East).  The second goal for DeSales came in the second half when Silber mishandled a shot from 30 yards out and the ball fell right onto the feet of sophomore forward Stevie Castellani for the tap-in score.

The Valiants had their chances to get back in the match but were unable to convert.  DeSales junior goalkeeper Colin Sulpizio had a solid game in the net for the Bulldogs and made saves that kept his team in the lead.  The few highlights of the match for the Valiants came off the great play and hustle of freshman forward Dan Lorandini (Garden City Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) as well as freshman midfielder Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa).

Coach Gregg Miller was frustrated after the loss. "It's disappointing because DeSales didn't have to do anything to earn the win," said Miller.  "When you make the type of mistakes that we made on both goals, you won't win many conference college soccer matches."

The Valiants are facing all conference opponents for the remainder of the season, and the squad has a week off to regroup before facing Misericordia next Saturday.  As Coach Miller observed stoically: "We have to pick ourselves up and go again."
