Box Score STAMFORD, Conn. – The top line of senior
Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)) and sophomores
Paul Allan Bamberg (Lulea, Sweden/Lulea HF J20 (SWE)) and
Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) combined for three goals and five assists as the Manhattanville men's hockey team put away a pesky Nazareth squad by a 6-3 score in an ECAC West Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Terry Conners Rink.
The Valiant offense was clicking on Saturday against the Golden Flyers, scoring three times over the first 40 minutes and then potting three more in the third period to put the game away. Bamberg and Van Natter led the way with a goal and two assists each, followed by linemate Coleman with a goal and an assist. Seniors
Louie Balzano (Staten Island, N.Y./New York Apple Core (EJHL)) and
Craig Simchuk (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Saints (MJHL)) as well as freshman
Tanner Hicks (Calgary, Alta./Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) also scored for Manhattanville (3-2-0, 3-2-0 ECAC West) in the win.
Tom Seravalli, Jon-Paul Durso and Ben Blasko scored for Nazareth (1-4-1, 0-4-1 ECAC West) in a losing effort.
The visitors opened the scoring 6:10 into the opening period, as the former Valiant Seravalli camped himself in front of the net and put home a pass from Julius Tamasy to make it 1-0 Golden Flyers.
The visitors held the lead for nearly 11 minutes, but Manhattanville scored three goals in 4:04 on both sides of the first intermission to take back control of the game. Coleman got things started with his first of the year at 17:08 of the first, when he tapped home the rebound of a shot from the point by junior
Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL)) that caromed off the post. The Valiants capitalized on a Nazareth penalty late in the frame to take a lead into the first intermission, as Simchuk fired a wrist shot from the high slot off the water bottle of Naz goalkeeper Ed Zdolshek to put the home team in front.
Another penalty led to another Valiant score early in the second period, when Hicks potted the first goal of his career at the 1:12 mark. Senior
Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) had his initial shot saved by Zdolshek, but junior
Jake Mooney (Toronto, Ont./North York Rangers (OPJHL)) collected the rebound and dished across the crease to Hicks for the easy put away.
Nazareth got one back midway through the second on Blasko's third tally of the year and that is where the score stayed for the remainder of the frame, despite the Valiants having almost a minute of five-on-three advantage late in the period. While the team did not convert on that chance, the team got its fourth goal soon after at even strength, when Bamberg came in on a two-on-one with Van Natter and kept the puck before picking the top corner from the inside of the left circle for his first of the year at 1:42 of the third.
The goals kept coming in the final five minutes, as the Valiants scored twice more to salt the game away. At the 15:00 mark, Coleman came up the ice in transition and fed to the high slot for Van Natter, who again went high under the crossbar to beat Zdolshek. After Durso cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net to get the Golden Flyers back within two, Balzano put the game away by picking up the rebound of a Racklin shot that was redirected by Rivera and slipping it into an empty net with 2:35 remaining.
The Valiant power play showed some signs of life in the game, scoring twice on six man-up chances, while the penalty kill also killed off three of its four man-down chances.
Manhattanville finished the night with a 38-37 edge in shots. Senior netminder
Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H./Woodstock Slammers (MJHL)) allowed three goals but also came up with several huge saves among his 34 stops, including 15 saves in the third period to keep his team ahead. Zdolshek made 32 saves in a losing effort.
The Valiants will play their next four games away from home, beginning next Saturday when the squad travels to Neumann for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Knights.
